Job Description

Reporting to the VP, Corporate Development this Director, Corporate Development will take a lead role in complex transactions working with cross functional teams associated with those transactions from identification/evaluation through negotiation and completion.

Responsibilities

  • Lead scientific and financial evaluations of transformative strategic opportunities across a breadth of therapy areas.
  • Provide solid transaction management expertise to help implement innovative deal structures for the relevant transactions.
  • A catalyst to help develop and deliver various regional externalization strategies.
  • Work with leadership to ensure appropriate prioritisation and ranking of opportunities across the business.
  • Assemble and lead senior level international, multifunctional teams for the evaluation and transaction execution of strategic opportunities. Teams will include senior scientific, technical and commercial representatives from R&D, Finance, Legal, IP, Operations, GMSO and Global Commercial Operations.
  • Work with the teams to ensure due diligence assessments identify and focus on key risks, and lead the development of risk mitigation proposals.
  • Manage the relationship with the potential partner in a timely and professional manner; ensure that AZ remains competitive in 3rd party processes.
  • Ensure as far as possible that AZ is considered as preferred partner status by third parties
  • Prepare and present transaction opportunities to SET and Board as required. Oversee deal propositions and papers prepared by Business Development directors
  • Assist in, or lead as the case may be, the deal negotiation and closure.
  • Work with transaction integration and alliance management team to ensure adequate arrangements are in place from closing.
  • Ensure thorough transaction post mortems are prepared and shared internally.
  • Prepare activity reports for senior management as appropriate.
  • Undertake ad hoc business development projects as they arise and business need require

Essential requirements

  • Bachelor’s is required, preferred study in subjects involving strong numeracy, such as Mathematics, Engineering, Economics etc.
  • PhD. in Biology and Life Sciences, or advanced degree in Medical studies (e.g. MBChB), is preferred
  • Proven strong financial literacy. Expert knowledge of commercial and financial evaluation and business case preparation techniques.
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills, with proven ability to synthesise complex issues effectively.
  • Deep knowledge of pharmaceutical business and drug development process
  • Strong interpersonal and team leadership skills, demonstrating flexibility and a proven ability to deal with complexity under time pressure
  • Effective communicator to senior audiences, both in writing and orally
  • Transactional experience with a relevant track record
  • Ability to execute innovative and complex transactions across therapy areas
  • Familiarity with a broad range of transaction structures and applicable legal principles
  • Experienced in leading international, multi-functional project teams of senior professionals both internal and external advisers.
  • Credibility with third parties, including companies, institutions and stakeholders
