Position Overview: Eaton Corporation’s Center for Connected Intelligent Solutions has an opening for a Director, Embedded Systems Center of Excellence, who is passionate about developing and managing a high performing engineering organization focused on developing reusable embedded solutions for a diverse selection of businesses and products. Eaton’s Center for Connected Intelligent Solutions (CCIS) accelerates Eaton’s capabilities through the development of reusable, secure, reliable, integrated, and connected embedded and IoT platforms, providing a foundation for our businesses to more rapidly develop innovative products and services. The Director, Embedded Software Center of Excellence will lead the embedded segment of CCIS and report to the CCIS Director. This person can be based in either of our Electrical Products Group locations (Pittsburgh, PA or Raleigh, NC). Essential Responsibilities: Recruit, lead, manage and mentor an agile global engineering team, including Scrum Masters, Software Architects, Developers, Testers, DevOps, and Delivery Managers, which defines, implements, tests and supports the embedded platforms and associated hardware reference platforms. Facilitate and manage the development of RTOS and Linux embedded platforms used by product teams across Eaton to accelerate their ability to deliver intelligent, connected products to their end customers. Management responsibilities include technical facilitation, budget allocation, hiring, one-on-one meetings with Directs, performance reviews, career guidance, technical capability assessments, hardware acquisition, software selection, and interfacing with internal and external partners. Develop requirements and roadmaps for embedded platforms based on needs from across Eaton businesses and industry trends. Engage directly with businesses to align the Embedded CoE roadmaps with those from the businesses. Build an internal Eaton community around the embedded platforms, promoting their use, providing documentation, supporting platforms adopters, and providing mechanisms for other engineering teams to contribute back to the embedded platforms. Advance the state of the art in software development methodologies, standards and tools within the CoE and promote sharable learnings with other Eaton businesses. Establish relationships with external academic and industry partners, driving a pipeline of personnel, technologies, and staff augmentation as appropriate. Manage software quality through engineering techniques, high caliber talent, code reviews, static/dynamic analysis, rigorous testing, and a persistent focus on automation. Lead and provide expertise to cross-functional initiatives across the broader organization. Recent examples include building a Data Analytics and Data Science platform and exposing entitlement capabilities for embedded products. Work directly with all Electrical Sector and Digital Office Eaton businesses, including promoting the embedded platforms, eliciting business needs, planning platform releases, delivering platforms to businesses, ensuring success in utilizing the platforms, and providing ongoing support to the businesses. Evangelize your work and the benefits to Eaton to technical and business leaders, including senior leadership. Create a highly collaborative, motivated team environment and regularly partner with global Business Leaders, Executives, Project Managers, Product Teams, Stakeholders, UX, Architects, and IT to define requirements, manage product backlogs, prioritize work, and coordinate product roadmaps Position Criteria: Drive significant strategic investment and implementation across platform COEs including building one or more new platforms to meet business needs, one such example is a reusable analytics platform. Support the redesign the platform CoE’s organization (CCIS) by defining job roles, interfaces between roles and performance expectations of each. Support the organizational change management to implement the new organization design. Define portions of the open source software policy for the company and influence global teams to support and extend the policies. Drive significant technology decisions that impact dozens of products across the company. Exercise superior judgement and discretion to positively impact the product success across the company. Expand the role of platforms globally across the company by growing investment, effectively budgeting, building next round of leaders, manage team members that manage others, and scaling outputs in the form of software deliverables. Qualifications Basic Qualifications: 15+ years of experience in product development including 10+ years’ hands-on embedded software development experience 10+ years of experience having primary responsibility for shipping embedded products 10+ years of experience in managing high performance engineering organizations 5+ years of experience with diverse industrial communications and/or Ethernet based communications (e.g. Modbus RTU/TCP, EtherNet/IP, CANopen, IEC61850, BACnet/IP, …) 5+ years of experience with Agile development methodologies and concepts Hands on experience with diverse embedded systems including in the microcontroller and Linux spaces Working knowledge of IoT considerations for developing IoT-connected embedded devices Abreast of upcoming software development/engineering tools, trends, and methodologies Understanding of object-oriented design and programming skills, including the use of design patterns. Knowledge of CI/CD concepts, tools, and technologies. Teamwork, communication, strong interpersonal skills across cultural and organizational boundaries. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills including the ability to effectively explain complex technical concepts to a wide variety of audiences including executive leadership Strong problem solving and reasoning ability, exhibiting technical innovation and creative solutions Sharp analytical abilities and proven design skills Good judgment, time management, and decision-making skills Travel: up to 25% Preferred Qualifications: Significant experience in ensuring the cybersecurity of embedded systems Former role as embedded systems architect Experience leading and coaching all levels of Software Developers, Architects, Test Engineers, and Scrum Masters. Experience with Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, Cybersecurity, and DevOps. Experience designing real-time control systems Knowledge of developing (soft/hard) real-time embedded systems on Linux Experience developing commercial/industrial and consumer based embedded devices Experience developing internet-connected embedded devices Experience developing embedded applications with model-based design and development Education: An undergraduate degree is required.
