Purpose: The Director of R&D Engineering is accountable for processes, policies, and procedures related to Capital and Facility planning, engineering best practices, and providing or organizing technical support across R&D organizations. This position is the Engineering point of contact for R&D groups and other functions and as such will coordinate with various departments to provide technical support from other engineering and technical resource groups both within and outside R&D. The position coordinates with other departments to ensure that engineering best practices are employed across a variety of projects ensuring their success. Responsibilities: Directly manage development and implementation of multiple projects within R&D across varied sites ensuring compliance with applicable policies and procedures. Develop business cases and justifications with R&D stakeholders, facility planners and project managers. Ensure timely, accurate and comprehensive project reporting performance to the broader organization. Communicate R&D program status to project sponsors and leadership. Accountable for development and quality of integrated project plan (timelines, milestones, interdependencies, resources, value, and risks) and identification / management of the critical path(s). Identifies and resolves roadblocks that may hinder successful program deployment. Provide regular, clear, and concise communication and updates on the program status and individual projects to sponsor and site management as well as global reporting lines. Prepare and deliver executive presentations and chairs steering committee meetings. Serves as R&D Engineering representative to eCOP. Ensure the overall alignment of R&D engineering programs with the various R&D needs. Contribute to the development and implementation of an engineering programs that maximize efficiency and success of capital projects within R&D. Propose innovative engineering programs for R&D including strategic program justifications and cost/benefits for Long Range Capital Planning purposes. Contributes to the strategy, vision, and engineering processes for the R&D. Coordinate the development of strategies that are aligned with business priorities as well as identify and implement initiatives that will drive business value for the organization. Coordinate project scopes, development plans, program strategies and milestones / critical path activities in collaboration with both direct and indirect reporting project managers / project engineers. Gathers, analyzes and consolidates information on all programs and related projects. Cross-functional alignment of the global engineering project team activities across R&D domestic and international sites. This can include budgetary responsibilities. Coordinate with R&D Finance to ensure review and accuracy of spend including LBEs. Oversee project budgets, monitoring actual versus planned costs. Direct the development and writing of engineering practices, procedures, and policies for R&D. Has signature authority for R&D for Engineering Standards and Specifications. Provide coaching and direction to enhance team’s capabilities and performance providing leadership to both direct and indirect staff members. Ensure compliance with all applicable procedures and regulations. Qualifications Basic: Bachelor of Engineering, architecture, or Science. Master’s degree a plus. Should have 12 years demonstrated leadership experience in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, or related industry. Prefer at least 10 years in project engineering/management for large capital projects. Proven client relationship management. Negotiation and conflict management skills are important. Ability to understand and resolve conflicting needs of key stakeholders. Excellent written and verbal communication. Ability to apply leadership skills to achieve expedited project delivery. This includes skills in delegation, supervision, and planning, fostering teamwork and thinking strategically. Demonstrated application of project management tools and techniques to successful project execution. Demonstrated matrix management skills and clear ability work effectively in cross functional team environment. Aptitude for managing multiple projects and priorities. Well organized and methodical approach to problem solving. Must be able to offer solutions to Senior Leadership. Impact of recommendations could have substantial impact to R&D. Large capital project cost control/budgetary management experience. Proven track record of impactfully leading and developing adaptable engineers or technical teams. Position has flexibility to work out of AbbVie’s Irvine or Lake County site.
