Allergan Aesthetics R&D is establishing a new discovery team to focus on understanding the effects of healthy aging and environmental exposure on hallmarks of aging including senescence, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA damage, epigenetic changes at cellular and molecular level. Linking these cellular and molecular changes to skin quality attributes (such as Texture, Elasticity, Hydration and Pigmentation) will allow identification of new biological pathways, biomarkers and targets for addressing skin quality challenges. The team will leverage existing Allergan Aesthetic and AbbVie discovery capabilities, expertise and assets including significant synergies with Device, Skincare, AbbVie Dermatology Discovery, Extracellular Matrix (ECM) biology initiative and Genomic Research Center. This newly created position of Head, Skin Quality and Aging Discovery, will establish discovery priorities aligned with clinical innovations and commercial goals; identify and streamline internal and external resources and resource gaps; and provide leadership for future growth of the discovery team. Key Responsibilities: Establish a dermatology discovery program focused on new target identification and evaluation of external and internal existing and new potential aesthetic therapeutics for skin quality and aging related changes in healthy skin. Incorporate novel technologies into the strategic plan to assess biological pathways and gene sets that mechanistically link the gene targets to relevant aesthetic skin conditions. Identify biological pathways, biomarkers, and knowledge gaps in the development of selected phenotype via systematic literature reviews and targeted internal/external research. Design and lead genetic, epigenetic, and genomic studies, in collaboration with AbbVie Genomic Research Center, for delivering novel findings and relevant gene discoveries. Develop and leverage translational research insights early in Discovery to inform a robust and impactful biomarker strategy for clinical studies. Play a key role in developing a coordinated approach to external research programs through relationships with External academicians, industry, and academic consortia as well as through strong relationships established with other R&D functions and Global Medical Affairs. Collaborate closely on design of clinical development strategy and associated clinical trials to determine proof of mechanism, outcome assessments, digital and non-invasive assessment tools and communication strategy. Collaborate closely with aesthetics R&D teams in neurotoxin, hair research, fillers and devices to ensure broad application of discovery efforts Represents Allergan Aesthetics at external meetings including investigator meetings, scientific association meetings, etc. Provide subject matter expertise for external collaborations and due diligence assignments. Qualifications PhD or MD/PhD with at least 10 years’ discovery biology experience in dermatology related field or 20 years overall post-PhD experience in dermatology related field. Biologist with deep genomics knowledge with emphasis on skin-related cells. Demonstrated ability to design and lead genetic, epigenetic and translational studies delivering novel findings and relevant target discoveries. Strong collaboration skills and proven ability to drive goals in a highly matrixed, collaborative environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Additional Desired skills Recognized expertise in understanding how cells interact with their environment to promote normal skin repair/development. Thorough understanding of clinical assessment techniques in dermatology, including non-invasive assessments in desirable. Thorough understanding of normal aging process and hallmarks of aging such as senescence, autophagy, mitochondrial disfunction etc. Experience in Immunology research is desirable.
