Within Albemarle, Lithium is a large component of the overall company at over one billion dollars in net sales, and the company’s fastest growing line of business with mid double digit estimated growth across the Energy Storage, Industrials and Specialties markets. Lithium is playing a key role in powering the EV (electric vehicle) and eMobility evolution, fueling both transportation and consumer electronics technology advancement. 

The Strategy & Planning group is a key contributor to the Lithium business overall success, as this group works collaboratively across all of our lines of business, as well as functional areas, to develop the vision and path which shapes the business to help achieve its full potential, helps align the organization to succeed and communicates the strategy effectively to engage key internal and external stakeholders. It is an exciting time to join the team, as the Strategy & Planning organization is currently forming and initiating this important contribution.

The Sr. Director, Business Development and Partnerships is a pivotal role on the Strategy & Planning team, responsible for assisting the VP Strategy & Planning in identifying, evaluating and executing upon strategic partnerships for the Lithium business across a range of areas.  These partnership agreements can take the form of potential off-take agreements, JV partnerships and/or M&A:

Negotiations with both existing partners and new ventures, in support of our overall strategic objectives.

New partnerships which support our growth platforms and lines of business, including carbonate, hydroxide, advanced energy storage, recycling and specialties.

Partnerships which support Lithium resource acquisition and expansion, securing supply of resources needed to support growth platforms.

Evaluation of new partnerships which contribute to Lithium’s sustainability initiatives.

Customer partnerships such as LTAs, joint venture manufacturing with OEMs, tolling agreements, etc.

The Sr. Director, Business Development and Partnerships will lead all “deal flow” on behalf of Lithium business, in conjunction with Corporate M&A, and with the support of the Growth Platform Leads, Finance, Legal, Compliance etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and implement an overall partnership strategy framework for the Lithium organization, segmenting “global alliances” from “business partners” and “collaboration partners”, and identify those which are highly integrated vs. loosely coupled, as well as those which are strategic vs. tactical. 
  • Identify Lithium’s “partnership priorities” and rank partnerships according to magnitude of opportunity, benefit and strategic alignment.  Align partner strategy with Lithium business operations.
  • Develop a pipeline for all partnership deal flow across growth platforms, resources, sustainability etc. and qualify highest priority targets in each area.  Work with Growth Platform Leads, Finance, Legal, Compliance to evaluate and execute partnership agreements/deals which benefit the Lithium business and align with our strategic objectives.
  • Support growth platforms and lines of business, including carbonate, hydroxide, advanced energy storage, recycling and specialties, as well as resources platform, with partnership identification, evaluation and execution.  Partner with Corporate M&A on any acquisitions.
  • Conduct strategic analysis to map potential partnerships across the value chain (i.e. sustainability related ventures) and consider the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of each.  Selectively proceed with partnerships that support and promote Lithium’s strategic objectives.
  • Partner with the Commercial organization and Marketing on initiatives such as LTAs, joint venture manufacturing with OEMs, tolling agreements, etc.
  • This will be a high-level individual contributor role and is not estimated to have direct reports, therefore, the Sr. Director, Business Development and Partnerships role will be “hands on”, and actively involved in deal flow, working on behalf of the growth platforms and the commercial organization and in conjunction with Corporate M&A.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Master’s degree.
  • 10 years plus work experience in investment banking, private equity or, internal corporate M&A or

       partnership roles.

  • Leadership and execution of high profile partnerships and deals with high impact & proven success.
  • Strong financial acumen and negotiation skills.  Blend of strategy (i.e. partnership strategy  

       framework, strategic analysis to map potential partnerships) as well as execution (negotiation of key

       terms of agreement, tactical positioning).

  • Excellent collaboration and influence without authority skills.
  • Executive communication capability.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Fluent English speaking & writing.
