This is a critical, global role across Hematology R&D that ensures team capacity and expert resource management to spur team success in this highly competitive space. The Director of Portfolio and Capacity Management will work with the Hematology Leadership Team and the greater network of portfolio and capacity management specialists across AZ to define the vision and strategy for planning and control  activities, including the deployment and continuous improvement of associated tools and processes. This position provides the unique opportunity to be part of a global, multi-year transformation of the Hematology R&D team and building of an innovative pipeline with great impact to AZ and our patients

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

  • In conjunction with key partners across Hematology, develop the vision, strategy and  plan / roadmap for planning and control of functional resource and capacity
  • For Clinical Development roles, work with product teams in resource forecasting, and tracking to ensure that there is an adequate understanding of functional resource supply and its allocation vs demand. Lead individual periodic reviews with teams to review resource and any supply constraints. Ensure financial data is maintained in PLANIT for relevant functional budgets
  • Ensure R&D portfolio tools (e.g. PLANIT, Capacitor, Assigner, MyTime, etc.,) are reliable, i.e. contain up-to-date and accurate information and are deployed to effectively support planning and control (P&C) of Hematology budgets. This includes upkeep with constantly evolving portfolio priorities, provision of proactive analysis/input to and, in collaboration with functional/project Leaders, generation of options to address resource constraints and implementation of adjustments to ensure successful priority delivery. In this regard, serve as the functional representative on the Oncology Portfolio Resource Council (OPRC) for the Hematology function
  • Identify and implement improvements to processes, guidelines, reports or changes to enabling tools for portfolio and capacity management
  • Serve as process lead in key business planning areas. Adopt the role of process or system owner, coordinate with Finance to communicate timings for business updates by functional accountable leaders in line with Rolling Budget Update (RBU) / Long Range Plan (LRP) timetable and process
  • Support project and functional leaders in development and maintenance of high-quality plans and demand forecasts. Coach leaders in planning best practice, independently review data, and suggest improvements to templates, algorithms, tools and processes
  • Lead interactions with resource councils and other relevant P&C related partners external to the function. Ensure reliable process for information collection
  • Provide functional input to any assessment of the ability to deliver the portfolio required by broader AstraZeneca groups
  • Define processes and manage support to Hematology function with respect to management of contract staff
  • Leads cross functional projects and programs, where required

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience, Essential:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in finance and/or scientific subject area, advanced degree desirable. Project or business- management qualification highly desirable
  • Significant number of years’ experience working in the drug development/pharmaceutical business in a matrix environment
  • Proven strategic thinking, experience of strategic project/program/change implementation (including experience of strategic frameworks and business analysis)
  • Significant experience of Portfolio/Project management in a large and complex business environment, preferably within an international environment
  • Strong financial skills and experience of managing budgets in a complex matrix organization.
  • Leadership skills, including the ability to solve problems that involve many decision makers, and develop multiple options / recommendations
  • Extensive networking skills, ability to interact widely and effectively with senior leaders both within the function (on both an inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary basis) and external to the function
  • Excellent influencing skills to enable effective management and communication to internal and external partners at the highest levels in AZ appropriately across a range of cultures
  • Proven high level of strategic and analytical thinking, problem solving and influencing skills to provide direction to team or organization
  • Capable of making effective decisions, acts courageously and communicates with conviction at all levels
  • Ability to assimilate complex information and identify key issues and messages

Desirable Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of all project management tools and processes. Experience in use of Planisware (PLANIT), and analytics platforms e.g. Spotfire, Tableau, Power BI
  • Experience and skilled at facilitation and negotiation at senior levels
  • Project management certification is desirable but not mandatory
  • Knowledge of process improvement methodology such as Lean Sigma/Change Management is desirable but not required
  • Knowledge of oncology drug development strategy and process
  • Knowledge of or passion for digital solutions and creation of automated reporting If this describes you, apply today!
