The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager will be a member of the Corporate EHS Governance and compliance team and will provide overall EHS support, specializing in environmental program areas such as waste, air emissions and other environmental compliance matters. .  The EHS manager will develop programs and training to ensure sites are uniformly meeting BD’s environmental standards and to support new emerging environmental requirements.

The EHS Manager will provide support and guidance to the BD businesses and sites for environmental compliance and performance improvement programs as well as to facilitate implementation of company strategies and programs. This associate will serve as a resource on environmental issues for the Company on cross-functional teams as assigned.

The EHS Manager will monitor the external trends which could impact BD manufacturing and business practices, providing guidance to on how best to respond to these external developments.

The EHS Manager will be an integral part of the Corporate EHS Audit team supporting field-based and desktop audits, analytics and continuous improvement of the audit processes and procedures.  

This position reports to the Director EHS , Governance and Compliance

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and conduct compliance and follow-up audits of manufacturing sites, distribution centers, research and office locations to ensure sites meet BD’s environmental policies, standards and programs, including federal and local requirements, through site visits.
  • Assist in the overall coordination of audits with third party auditors on domestic and international audits.
  •  Leads development and maintenance of a model for follow-up audits that leverages internal resources and strengthens our BD’s EHS talent.
  • Assist in data management and analysis of Corporate EHS Audit results and conduct quarterly reviews to ensure closure of action items.
  • Develop and deliver programs and training to support the Corporate EHS audit program and other environmental requirements as needed.
  • Provide coaching support to local EHS coordinators on program issues, especially as it pertains to environmental matters
  • Support the company’s activities in meeting environmental targets, ISO 14001 certification and other Sustainability activities and goals.
  • Assist on soil and groundwater remediation projects for current or former operations. Manage consultants on all remediation activities through to site closure.
  • Assist in the Due Diligence process, on environmental matters, during acquisitions or facility closures, when needed.
  • Participate as requested in meetings with regulatory agencies to discuss remediation plans and closure strategies.
  • Assist in data management and analysis associated with the environmental impacts of BD operations
  • Contribute to the development of systems, standards, guidelines and tools that supports BD’s sustainability programs and stated goals
  • Maintain technical expertise in environmental technology and regulations. Anticipate and evaluate the impact of changing environmental requirements on BD operations. Provide assistance to BD management and manufacturing sites in these areas.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in environmental science, environmental engineering or a related engineering or science field.
  • Environmental auditor certification or hazardous material management preferred.
  • Knowledge of US environmental regulations: SPCC, RCRA, CWA, CAA, SARA, SDWA, CERCLA, TSCA, USDO
  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in environmental program management, preferably in a manufacturing setting. Consulting experience also acceptable. EHS auditing experience necessary.
  • Experience with ISO Certification
  • Up to 30-35% travel
  • Strong interpersonal skills, essential in dealing with people at all levels and in a variety of functions including
    • technical staff, business team leaders, union personnel
  • Ability to influence and motivate others to quickly achieve results; good training skills
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, procedures and legislative process.
  • Excellent communication skills, personal rapport and motivation are required to effectively coach internal staff and work with outside groups and agencies; experience in applying technology through teamwork
