How will you make an impact?
The EHS Specialist I will be responsible for supporting development and implementation of environmental, health and safety programs. The position will execute EHS processes as directed allowing for consistent adherence to applicable laws, regulations, standards and ordinances.
EHS is responsible for implementing programs and policies that comply with all applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations. The EHS department promotes a safe and environmentally friendly work environment through the integration of value-added programs, policies, and services. The group strives to promote a positive safety culture through communication, engagement, and continuous improvement.
What will you do?
- With direction the Specialist I will ensure proper onsite management and disposal of solid, universal, hazardous, and biological waste. Team with functional areas to reduce wastes, reuse, and recycle various materials
- Consolidates chemical waste streams and manages biological waste on-site
- Conducts environmental, health and safety inspections as assigned
- Maintains an on-the-floor presence and provides technical assistance and advice to operations managers and employees regarding environmental health and safety issues
- Ensures the communication of environmental health and safety matters on site
- Participates in accident/incident investigations as required
- Conduct training to ensure employee knowledge and understanding of safety regulations and requirements pertinent to the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry
- Supports day-to-day operations as necessary
- Provide training sessions and orientations to new employees
- Maintain regulatory paperwork for various agencies
- Other duties as assigned
How will you get here?
- BS in safety, science or engineering-related field
- 2+ years of proven EHS experience, preferably in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology-related field
- Familiarity with regulations and interactions with various state and federal agencies including EPA, OSHA, DOT, RCRA
- Knowledge of biotechnology techniques, hazards and safety requirements
- Training and experience in HAZMAT, first aid, RCRA, DOT or other relevant EHS topics
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Works independently under general supervision and direction. Performs work that requires decision making and the consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion
- Must possess knowledge and experience sufficient to allow interpretation of chemical compatibility, safety hazard, and other handling information found in safety data sheets (SDS) and other reference documents to allow segregation of hazardous materials for lab-packing, shipment and treatment of hazardous and non-regulated waste
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively and diplomatically with individuals from multiple departments at all levels of the organization
- Proven ability to work under pressure and adapt to a rapidly changing environment
- Strong organizational and time management skills to balance working on multiple projects in parallel
- Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; ability to learn company software systems
- Document work clearly, accurately, and in accordance with applicable regulations
- Possess good understanding and application of safety principles, concepts, practices, and standards
- Certified for forklifts with experience utilizing other material handling equipment
Work Hours and Conditions
- Working hours Monday - Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. Overtime as needed to meet project timelines.
- Overtime may be required under emergency situations or to meet project time line and support site needs.
- Must be physically able to move between building, climb ladders, wear level 3 PPE (including respiratory protection), and lift and carry 45 pounds and a regular basis. Work in hot and humid environments
