It is also the second largest city in Liaoning Province and the largest port in northern China. Dalian is a culturally diverse city and the Japanese and Russian influence is still seen today in the city’s architecture, cherry blossoms and even in its language (with some Russian and Japanese words used in the Dalian dialect which is apparently unusual for China). There are lots of activities in and around Dalian that include the hot springs, skiing and ice hockey during the colder winter months and, in the warm, summer months, swimming at one of Dalian’s popular beaches (such as Tiger Beach or Pebble Beach), running or walking along the winding coastal Binhai Road (which is likened to the corniche of the French Riviera), visiting one of the region’s 49 national parks, or enjoying the nightlife in one of the plentiful bars, restaurants (Dalian has excellent seafood), theatres or other forms of lively nightlife. Dalian is also well-known for the shopping and soccer (Dalian has a soccer team that is famous within China with some players having gone on to play for clubs like Manchester United and Manchester City). The region enjoys warm summers and cold, dry winters and the air quality is good here allowing plenty of opportunity to take in the stunning scenery.
