Purpose of the Position

This role is to manage the delivery of a portfolio of standardization projects that provide tailored solutions for clients from a diverse range of market sectors. This typically involves managing the drafting, development and publication of national standards and client-sponsored standards. It also includes managing other client-sponsored standardization services such as standards mapping and scoping exercises.

This role will suit candidates with a proven ability to deliver multiple projects to client expectations, on budget, to schedule and to an expected level of quality. It is important to demonstrate strong editorial and rewriting skills, an ability to critically analyse technical content and research findings, and manage a publication production process. It is also important to demonstrate excellent communication skills, including authoritative meeting facilitation and strong persuading and influencing skills, in order to manage client relationships and build consensus amongst a variety of external and internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Project Management

  • Manage complex and challenging standardization projects, including the development of British Standards, BSI PASs and private standards, and the delivery of other standardization services such as standards mapping and scoping exercises.
  • Proactively lead on solving problems as they arise throughout the duration of a project.
  • Ensure complete financial management of client-sponsored projects and liaise with the Finance team.
  • Proactively identify ways to improve the service offering and the way the team works to deliver projects.

Standards Development and Editorial Expertise

  • Deliver client and stakeholder value by providing high quality standardization products and services, consistent with BSI’s reputation as a credible independent standards development facilitator.
  • Apply and advise project stakeholders such as client, technical author, PAS steering group and BSI technical committee/panel on the processes for a given workflow (e.g. as set out in BS 0 for British Standards and PAS 0 for BSI PASs)
  • Apply and advise project stakeholders on editing and standards drafting rules, through the critical analysis of technical content, use of editorial and rewriting skills and application of standards development knowledge
  • Review, assess, edit and proofread draft client-sponsored standards (e.g. BSI PASs and private standards) and national, European and international standards using a thorough knowledge of editing and standards drafting rules, as appropriate carrying out a gap analysis of content against scope

Customer and Stakeholder Management

  • Effectively manage relationship with external stakeholders and project suppliers, such as client, technical author, consultant, researcher, PAS steering group, PAS review panel and BSI technical committee/panel
  • Comprehensively and effectively manage any client or stakeholder queries
  • Effectively manage relationship with internal stakeholders, such as the Standards Market Development sector teams and the Standards Solutions team
  • Maintain communication with the Standards Solutions Business Development team, who manage BSI’s contractual and commercial relationship with the client for sponsored standardization projects, providing support for project scoping where required.
  • Identify and notify the Standards Market Development sector teams and Standards Solutions Business Development team of new business opportunities.
  • Engage the Marketing and Public Relations teams where necessary to promote publications.

About You

  • Extensive experience of technical editing and rewriting
  • Experience of managing multiple projects
  • Experience of facilitating group work at different corporate levels
  • Excellent technical editing skills, with ability to draft content with technical experts
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to authoritatively chair meetings, engage clients and stakeholders and present confidently to multiple audiences on familiar products and processes
  • Ability to understand customer requirements and provide an exceptional customer experience
  • Excellent command of word processing and project management tools, such as Word, Excel, Project and SAP
  • A proactive, resourceful and results driven outlook.
  • Experience in making decisions independently.
