Eaton’s Electrical Sector DERMS Center of Excellence and Eaton Research Lab (ERL) are seeking an Energy Systems Development Participant in our Moon Township, PA and Golden, CO locations. Primary Function: Eaton Research Labs (ERL) and the Distributed Energy Resource Management Solutions (DERMS) Center of Excellence (CoE) are currently seeking for an Energy Systems - Microgrids & DERMS Solutions to join our team in Golden CO and Moon Township, PA as a development program participant. The ERL is a corporate R&D function within Eaton's Chief Technology Officer, responsible for innovative and breakthrough technology development and commercialization for Eaton products and service solutions. Eaton’s DERMS CoE accelerates the company’s growth by building advanced control algorithms and state machine logic for DERMS applications that are scalable, cost-effective, and manufacturable as well as standardized design methodologies that can be adopted by multiple businesses (e.g. UPS, microgrid controls, Energy storage, etc.), which provides a foundation for our business to more rapidly develop innovative energy products. The development participants will work in a team environment and contribute to the software development of advanced control and optimization-based solutions for microgrids. These individuals will learn about Distributed Energy Resources (DER) control development, implementation, and validation for a wide spectrum of power conversion and protection products. They will also learn about model-based techniques, such as MATLAB Simulink and Hardware in the Loop (HIL) testing, during the design and validation on new products within the Eaton’s product portfolio. The annual salary range for this role is $85,000 - $95,000 a year. Essential Functions: Work with Eaton Division engineering teams and the Eaton Research Lab (ERL) researchers on projects to develop and test algorithms that enable the delivery of advanced, state of the art commercial DERMS solutions. Develop and apply tools for advanced power system simulation and HIL analysis. Examples of tools include PSCAD, RTDS, CYME, MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, OPAL-RT, and/or TyphoonHIL). Contribute to novel real-time advanced control techniques for DERs, microgrid, grid-edge devices, and utilities. Provide maintenance of power systems application functionality, including code fixes, documentation, and user interfaces. Collaborate with functional managers, system engineers and embedded software developers to distill product/system requirements/use cases to developing module & system-level code and unit tests that are aligned with product direction. Participating in agile development planning efforts. Qualifications Basic qualifications: Actively enrolled in a bachelor, master’s, or doctoral degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months, with focus in energy systems, electrical, software, or computer engineering from an accredited institution. Minimum of 2 prior intern/co-op assignments of progressive experience in research and development of solutions to address challenge issues of DERs integration and modern power grid. Geographic flexibility to relocate within the United States for the duration of the Internship Program. Preferred: Major in electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering or related field. Demonstrated experience in control and optimization of DERs and/or microgrids. Basic experience in software design, development and/or integration. Software programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C/C++ etc. Exposure to optimization scheduling and forecasting techniques and tools for power systems and energy management. Experience using CYME, OpenDSS, PSCAD, Simulink, RTDS, Opal-RT, or other electromagnetic transient programs. Experience with DER communication protocols, such as Modbus, DNP3, MQTT, P2030.5, etc. Familiarity with DER grid code interconnection standards, such as IEEE 1547 or CA Rule 21 Collaborative orientation. The ability to succeed in a highly team-oriented environment. Self-motivated and goal-oriented individual. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in dealing with management, employees, customers, and suppliers.
