Exponent's Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science Practice has provided over thirty years of services related to the investigation and analysis of mechanical systems behavior for products ranging from aircraft and marine transportation to all types of industrial equipment and consumer products. Our engineers and scientists have understanding of all areas of mechanical engineering, including reliability and hazard evaluation, design assessment, fluid and thermal analysis, and materials life prediction. Exponent's metallurgists, polymer and corrosion scientists, electrochemists, and ceramists have many years of experience in the prevention and analysis of material failures.

Exponent is currently hiring for an Engineer in our Shanghai, China office. The individual in this position will be responsible for the analysis of electrical, mechanical and materials failures ranging from consumer products and electronics to complex mechanical systems; conducting hands-on failure analysis and planning and executing laboratory tests and simulations. Other duties will include field inspections as well as metallurgical analysis and testing of mechanical and electrical designs to determine the cause of accidents and failures. A long-term goal for a successful candidate will be to develop business and bring new clients to the firm. Specialized knowledge of photography, metallography, optical microscopy and SEM/EDS, failure analysis, and corrosion or welding technology is desirable.

Common activities will include: traveling with senior staff to client sites; performing engineering evaluations and failure investigations; performing quality assurance audits of client product lines; photographing and documenting evidence and products; communicating with clients in the U.S. and Asia; and developing tests and test programs using a variety of analysis equipment.

Qualifications for this position include:

  • Written and verbal fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field from a top university in which English is the primary language
  • Ability to conduct an engineering investigation of defective products and determine the cause(s) of failure
  • Clearly communicate findings through reports and presentations
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated individual requiring minimal supervision
  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Willingness to travel frequently as needed to project sites (Mainland China, Japan, Korea, United States)
  • Excellent hands-on engineering skills
  • Relocation to China

An ideal candidate will have experience in performing engineering investigations and calculations of real-world problems. Must be an excellent problem solver and must have presented in front of business clients, and have published technical papers in journals or engineering publications. Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills are required. Must be able to work well as part of a larger team.
