Job Description

Title: Equipping Minister

Purpose

The Church is committed to fulfilling the Great Commission. Our strategy is to encourage the congregation to Connect with God and with others, to help them Grow closer to Christ, and to Go make disciples. The Equipping Minister facilitates this strategy. The core responsibility of the Equipping Minister is to foster spiritual growth in people through the discovery, development and exercising of their God-given gifts in the service of the congregation and community. This will include recruiting, training, rostering, coaching and supporting Church volunteers. With the different parts of the Body functioning in a healthy way, the congregation will be healthy and function properly.

Accountability

The Equipping Minister will:

  • Report directly to the Senior Pastor

  • Report indirectly to the DBICC Elder Board

  • Work closely alongside church staff and volunteers

  • Participate in annual and ad hoc performance reviews with the Senior Pastor

  • Report to the AGM goals for the year past, progress, and outcomes

  • Report to the AGM goals (plans, needs) for the coming year

Responsibilities

  • The Equipping Minister will work toward fostering positive relationships while recruiting, training, rostering, coaching and supporting Church volunteers. Below is a list of current ministry activities requiring volunteer support. The Equipping Minister will be expected to learn and understand the functions and needs of each ministry. He/she will ensure the smooth operation of these ministries and adapt appropriately as they change over time.

RECRUITING
Task: Recruit volunteers to serve in Church ministries

  • Encourage congregants to Connect, Grow and Go by actively serving the body of Christ

  • Identify individuals with serving gifts within our congregation and recruit them for

    appropriate areas of service

  • Develop and implement a system of identifying people’s gifts for ministry

  • Work with key ministry leaders to create clear job descriptions and training manuals

  • Create clear expectations about the ministry role and the time commitment

  • Initiate regular volunteer recruitment events

  • Prepare advertising and recruitment materials as needed

  • Develop, maintain, and update ministry descriptions

ROSTERING

Task: Oversee the volunteer rostering

  • Plan the roster based on the current volunteer ministry needs

  • Set appropriate expectations by publishing rosters at least 4 weeks in advance

  • Assess ways to automate the rostering process. For example: provide up-to-date roster

    access from smartphones, PCs or other devices, create ways that can automatically

    handle availability and time-off requests online, and allow for swaps

  • Ensure that the processes laid out in the Child Protection Policy are followed

  • Coordinate the rostering of new volunteers to ensure that they are properly trained

    before serving 

  • Implement intentional “time off” for volunteers as an opportunity for spiritual

    refreshment and rest

TRAINING/COACHING/SUPPORTING (manuals, systems)

Task: Consistently equip, encourage, and support the people serving the Church

  • Collaborate with the Senior Pastor, elders, deacons, and staff to achieve ministry goals and community outreach efforts

  • Encourage and equip volunteers so that they can be effective in their given ministry

  • Provide a structured training program for volunteers to each ministry with clear

    objectives and milestones (plan for orientation and training for ministry)

  • Schedule at least one group training session per year for prayer, learning, and team

    building for each ministry

  • Develop processes to ensure each ministry nurtures volunteers

  • Ensure periodic assessments of volunteers happen and incorporate appropriate mentoring/coaching relationships - respond as needed

SERVING AS A TEAM PLAYER
Task: Contribute to the team atmosphere of DBICC staff

  • Work toward the unity of the Church

  • Prioritize staff meetings/events

  • Contribute to the Church publications as needed

  • Initiate, chair and attend regular and ad hoc meetings, frequently scheduled after

    normal business hours

  • Help in other areas as needed and assigned in the overall ministry of the Church

  • Identify and use your spiritual gifts

  • Assume the best of team members . . . forgive, pray with and pray for, respect and

    protect team members

  • Assume feedback, correction, criticism, and suggestions can be beneficial to your

    spiritual growth and development in ministry

General Expectations

  • Resident of Discovery Bay, or able to commute

  • University Degree (Seminary or Bible School training not required)

  • Church Ministry Experience
