In this vital role you will report to the Vice President R&D Quality and be accountable for developing the Learning Strategy and creating a culture of learning for R&D globally that builds staff capabilities and drives performance in alignment with business priorities.  To achieve this objective, the position partners closely with Senior Leadership across R&D (Discovery Research, Translational Sciences, Global Regulatory Affairs and Safety, Global Development, Global Medical Affairs, Quality & Compliance The position also collaborates with Global Learning & Performance leaders in Commercial, Corporate, and Operations to develop an Enterprise-wide Learning Strategy and the appropriate learning infrastructure that fits with the end-to-end collaborative vision of One Amgen QMS.

  • Develop and execute the Global Learning & Performance strategy for R&D at the local, regional, and global levels in partnership with Senior Leadership across R&D
  • Oversee prioritization, design, development, and implementation of transformational, scientific, technical, regulatory, process, compliance, and leadership programs for R&D
  • Ensure learning programs meet core business strategies and elevate performance of R&D staff globally and report performance-related metrics to business leaders across R&D
  • Develop strategies to increase sustainability of learning
  • Identify opportunities to apply innovative approaches to learning to enhance learner experience, including technical advancements
  • Establish the Global Learning & Performance-R&D organizational structure, culture, and focus
  • Develop and lead a high-performing Global Learning & Performance-R&D team of approximately 45 Learning Professionals and support staff
  • Elevate expertise of Global Learning & Performance-R&D on performance analysis, adult learning principles, and instructional design to achieve business results
  • Stay abreast of and guide team on trends, innovations, and best practices in Learning & Performance
  • Act as a leading member for the governance of Learning & Performance for Amgen and develop an Enterprise-wide Learning strategy through Enterprise Learning Council leadership

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of R&D or Learning & Performance experience OR
  • Master’s degree & 10 years of R&D or Learning & Performance experience OR
  • Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of R&D or Learning & Performance experience AND
  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience leading a Learning and Performance team or other function within R&D is preferred though L&P leadership in other areas will be considered
  • Comprehensive knowledge of performance consultation, adult learning principles, and instructional design
  • Ability to lead high-performing teams within the biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical industry
  • Understanding of the legal and regulatory environment affecting R&D
  • Ability to create, grow, and develop high performing teams that deliver outstanding business results
  • Ability to drive organizational change
  • Experience in running large, complex organizations
  • Experience fostering an environment that drives creativity and innovation
