Job Description

How will you make an impact:

Reporting to the Application Manager, this position is an integral part of the North American Sales Team. The Field Application Scientist is responsible for the pre- and post-sales application support and market development activities for Thermo Fisher Scientific bulk elemental analysis product lines, with a focus on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Expected travel is up to 60%.

What will you do:

  • Develop a thorough understanding and strong application knowledge of the Thermo Fisher Scientific energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) instrumentation, and practical hands-on knowledge of XRF and XRD technologies in different applications.
  • Provide applications support for pre- and post- sales activities for the Thermo Scientific XRF & XRD product line, specifically:
    • Provide technical support for the field sales representatives by leading technical discussions and performing instrument demonstrations at customer sites and Thermo Fisher Scientific application laboratories.
    • Run customer samples/materials for instrument evaluation and generate compelling technical reports to assist sales.
    • Support field sales representatives in trade shows, seminar and technical symposia by presenting posters/orals and collecting competitive intelligence.
    • Identify, nurture and manage collaborations with thought leaders and partners to promote Thermo Fisher Scientific’s technology.
    • Provide post sales customer training in the form of hands-on laboratory sessions, lectures, and provide consultation to customers with regards to sample analysis recommendations.
    • Assist regional or district Sales Managers with product training of newly appointed field sales representatives.
    • Manage the regional demonstration laboratory including its inventories.
  • Keep informed of key applications and industry trends at industry seminars, conferences and symposia. Communicate regularly with the product management team and actively provide input on new product, software and service offering.
  • Participating in marketing collateral generation by authoring technical notes, application notes, white paper and peer reviewed journal articles.
  • Becoming the technical representative of the Thermo Scientific XRF & XRD product line to the broader business unit/division application team, identifying new applications/hyphenations to support division/corporate initiatives.
  • Willingness to travel in North America, up to 60%

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5-7 years of relevant industrial experience will be considered.
  • A Master’s degree in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, minerology, crystallography, analytical chemistry or related disciplines or a PhD preferred.
Experience:
  • Prior experience with both XRF and XRD is a MUST; experience with adjacent techniques such as ICP, AA and vibrational spectroscopy is a plus.
  • Effective verbal and written communication and good interpersonal skills are required.
  • Excellent public presentation skills and the ability to interact with and influence the key opinion leaders in the industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a cooperative team environment and focus on individual, time dependent projects with minimal direct supervision.
  • Must be able to travel both by air and ground carrier for up to 60%.
