Purpose of the Position:
- Scope out, conceptualize, source, assess, customize, install and start-up automotive glass finishing processes on commercially available technology, equipment, integration and automation
- Develop customized finishing process equipment, automation and modifications / improvements with strong fundamental understanding based on scientific principles
- Ensure industry-leading equipment, automation, process and manufacturing systems that provides manufacturing operations with sustainable advantage over the competition
- Build critical mass and bench strength in process understanding, manufacturing systems, equipment, measurements, automation and training necessary to sustain world-class glass finishing operation
- Broaden and extend competency in the field of glass finishing machinery system design, development, engineering and mass production start-up for automotive applications from prototype to plant floor level manufacturing systems
- Develop, analyze, start-up and transfer unique finishing system designs to solve non-classical applications
- Develop understanding of glass finishing process with superb edge strength, micron level precision and micron level finished surface imperfections using known methodologies, measurements, analytical tools, simulation and modeling
- Propagate proactively glass finishing engineering principles, practices and capability through CoE and CoP
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Perform glass finishing process engineering on integrated glass finishing manufacturing systems including automated G6 glass handling, Bystronic, XY-cutting tables, laser cutting, CNC’s, 2.5D gauge, edge strength measurements, edge chipping measurements, glass polishing, parts handling, cleaning and inspection
- Improve and automate manual processes and glass handling both independently and in cross-functional project teams of mixed disciplines
- Design & run experiments/tests/trials with DOE, checkout and analyze data to: recommend, verify and optimize process, equipment, and automation for manufacturing performance excellence
- Design tests, experiments, FAT, SAT, process development, qualification with DOE for new process / equipment
- Collect requirements to develop scope of work, ideas, concepts, spec’s & RFQ
- Work on design and analysis of first or next generation products, machines, fixture and machine components for robust design through design and material selection / analysis / behavior perspective
- Design manufacturing process and equipment layout, fixtures, jigs, carts and manual assists (generic and customized solutions)
- Engineer and improve production process and equipment for safety, quality, reliability, capacity, efficiency, flexibility, ergonomics, maintenance and ROIC
- Identify low-hanging fruits, prioritize opportunities, capture quick wins and highlight remaining gaps to fill
- Review concepts, designs & drawings for safety, accuracy, ease of manufacturing / fabrication, manufacturing effectiveness, feasibility, practicality, code compliance and potential interferences
- Source, customize and integrate off-the-shelf components, commercially-available machinery, solutions and standard systems into turn-key intelligent manufacturing lines through team collaboration
- Automate manual material handling and/or processes with robots, conveyors, AGV’s, cassettes and etc.
- Leverage vendors in fabrication, installation and replication of prototype, pilot or production equipment
- Work with suppliers to spec and procure precision products, fixture and components to support the projects
- Plan, coordinate and execute site preparation, equipment move-in, installation, hook-up, power-on, check-out, testing and start-up by interfacing with suppliers, development, manufacturing, technicians and trades professionals to get systems set-up and functional.
- Communicate ideas, plans, project status & opinions effectively in written format and via oral presentations with clear illustrations and drawings; utilize suitable media / communication channels and harness multiple media to communicate to different stakeholders effectively
- Document meetings, design reviews, site activities, progress, results, assignments, technical understanding, vendor assessment, equipment check-out, on-site installations, engineering changes, performance improvements, innovations and intellectual assets
- Contribute and facilitate decision-making and influence decision-makers, stakeholders and peers using suitable methodology, data, illustration and tools
- Share experience & lessons learned, cross-train, coach, guide, develop and support peers. - Individual must investigate prior art and document any Intellectual Property developed
- Present project updates for review by peers, customers and managers
- Project involved with: New lines start-up, equipment optimization & modifications, new process design and new product features.
Education & Experience:
- BS/MS/PhD majoring in Mechanical, Aerospace, Naval Engineering, Engineering Physics or related fields
- ≥ 5 years of solid experience in glass finishing development, engineering and related process equipment design, mechanical engineering & analysis and/or related fields
- Technical leader position available for suitable candidate with ≥ 10 years of solid and significant applied experience in glass finishing development and engineering, applied equipment design, automation, mechanical engineering, project management, team supervisory experience, technical strategic development and leadership, and in-depth technical analysis
- Experience working on glass finishing process equipment such as Bystronic, CNC’s, glass handling automation and manufacturing experience in automotive subcomponent production o Exposure to APQP, PPAP, IATF 16949 or Automotive Safety Testing a plus
- Experience of living, studying, working or extended traveling outside of home country or dealing with foreigners is a plus
- Extensive working experience in multi-national corporations is a plus

- In-depth working knowledge and troubleshooting experience with Bystronic, CNC’s, glass cutting & griniding
- Strong and applied working knowledge of MasterCAM and other popular CAD/CAM software packages
- Excellent 2D & 3D CAD skills with detailed knowledge of tuning drawings for different popular CAD/CAM packages (good command of AutoCAD, Solidworks, Inventor and MS Office)
- Deep understanding of quality systems, PFMEA, control plan and how engineering, operations & quality collaborates
- In-depth working know-how and hands-on experience with glass polishing process, technique & equipment
- Systematic and methodical hands-on process troubleshooting for source of scratches, chips, particles, stains and contamination on the production floor; documenting and sharing lessons learned afterwards
- Independently operate 2.5D gauges with ease to measure profile-of-line on parts with only curved edges
- Extensive experience in handling of think and flexible glass parts
- Experience working in or supplying equipment to Tier I, II or III automotive manufacturing plants
- Good understanding of robotics and proficient in robot programming & simulation (Fanuc series preferred)
- PLC programming experience for automation equipment - Technical expertise in the field of precision finishing machine systems design and development
- Technical expertise in the field of equipment development for glass and glass/ceramic processes
- Strong in machine design and equipment integration

- Hands-on experience with machine shop hand/power tools, milling machine, lathe and other fabrication machinery is a plus; machinery repairs and maintenance experience is also a plus
- Hands-on experience with mechanical vibration and/or noise measurement, analysis and reduction
- Hands-on exposure to robotic programming and/or simulation (Fanuc, Yaskawa & Kawasaki preferred)
- Exposure to PLC programming for process equipment is a plus (B&R, Mitsubishi Q, R series, AB/Rockwell, Siemens, Omron, Pilz and PackML coding standard, etc.)

- Experience in facility equipment and inflammable / corrosive fluids is a plus
