Job Description

Our Journals Editorial team is expanding, and we are looking for a Global Portfolio Director to join our Medical Sciences group. Reporting to and working with the Global Publishing Director, Earth, Life, and Medical Sciences, you will develop strategic plans that ensure growth of our Medical portfolio and deliver required commercial results. An emphasis of the role will be on building and maintaining relationships with key internal and external contacts to inform strategy, business development, and innovation within the portfolio. You will also spend time developing your external profile to build subject level knowledge and expertise.

A key function of the role will be leading and developing a global team, which will include setting objectives, reviewing performance, and monitoring progress against targets, both individually and as a team.

What you’ll be doing

40% of your time will be spent:

  • Working with Heads of Portfolio and Heads of Commissioning to drive consistent and effective performance and development
  • Managing global subject area portfolios to an agreed level of revenue and profitability
  • Leading the portfolio team, ensuring objectives are clear, relevant decision-making is devolved, and teams are empowered and incentivized to take responsibility and achieve goals

30% of your time will be spent:

  • Working with portfolio teams to build an acquisitions pipeline and deliver growth to agreed targets
  • Collaborating with Expert teams (i.e., Open Access, Publishing Ethics & Integrity) to drive continuous improvement and business growth
  • Working closely with the Global Portfolio Director, Earth and Life Sciences, and the Global Publishing Director, Earth, Life, and Medical Sciences, to maximize business growth opportunities 

20% of your time will be spent:  

  • Proactively building a network of contacts within key customer segments (i.e., Funder, Academic, and Corporate)
  • Maintaining topical knowledge of market and competitor activity to inform decisions on product and concept development

10% of your time will be spent:

  • Designing and delivering annual workforce plan to monitor resources; maximize efficiency and growth; and ensure talent attraction, development, and retention in appropriate geographic locations
  • Working with Leadership and Operational Excellence colleagues to set and maintain operational protocols to drive service, process and administrative efficiency and effectiveness

Qualifications

  • A strategic thinking and strong decision-maker with experience of strategic management of a profit center
  • Experience of influencing and communicating with global leadership, performance management, and development
  • Financial and management information analysis with a commercial and customer focus
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of journal business models
  • Subject area knowledge and understanding of the needs of key customers in Medicine and Health
  • Understanding the process of acquiring, managing, and publishing content
  • Knowledge of research funder policies and the market for research content
  • Knowledge of academic and library buying patterns and the factors that drive purchase and usage
  • Previous experience leading, mentoring, and coaching a team
  • Ability to drive creativity, change management, and continuous improvement

  • We currently have capacity for this role to be UK/US based or within one of our Asia Pacific regions, however you must have the right to live and work within the location you reside in
