Role Purpose: As part of the Affiliate Management Team, the Government Affairs Director will lead the Government Affairs (GA) function to design and deliver impactful strategies in full alignment with AbbVie brand and corporate priorities to positively shape our external environment and support sustainable patient access to medicines. Build AbbVie’s external profile among key stakeholders across the South Africa and Region Africa, utilize effective internal networks across the business and ensure high quality output. Effectively anticipate, track and analyze the full implications of policy issues that could impact AbbVie’s pipeline assets, commercial strategies or operating environment in the broader context. Objectives: Delivering impact through strategy development, coalition building and legislative analysis Lead the GA in ensuring the development of aligned strategies and platforms that make a valuable contribution to healthcare delivery, create consensus with stakeholders and demonstrate AbbVie’s commitment Ensure AbbVie is developing robust, transparent and effective working relationships with key external policymakers and stakeholders Ensure strong voice through IPASA involvement and shaping Maximize AbbVie’s contribution and impact to Industry Associations and Membership Bodies Ensure productive interact productively with other internal cross functional team, locally and within broader AbbVie (Region & Area) Play an active role in shaping the team culture and our ways of working Key Responsibilities: Support the coordination and management of AbbVie’s engagement across our stakeholder base, enhancing our reputation and building strong networks to position AbbVie as a trusted partner with external stakeholders involved in policy making Deliver impactful strategies, maintaining a focus on competent tactical delivery that build consensus within our community and progress core objectives Ensure external insights and expertise are heard and understood by business colleagues through matrix working for the continued refinement of our business approach Maintain coverage of all identified priority areas, resulting in active AbbVie contribution and consistent above brand and therapy area advocacy Own a robust planning process across the team that builds on team insights, continually anticipating trends and refining our approaches as appropriate Maintain and communicate an effective monitoring and analysis of legislative developments and initiatives. Coordinate AbbVie submissions on legislative and policy documents as per NDoH and Regulatory Bodies’ publications Ensure effective representation of AbbVie on various strategic platforms at national level and ensure AbbVie’s interest are optimally represented Provide regular updates to the local Affiliate and Region Qualifications Experience: Direct experience of working in an advocacy or legislative role, preferably from a previous healthcare or life sciences focused role Demonstrated success in the influencing of legislation and policy In-depth knowledge of the SA health care system and its mechanisms Demonstrated experience in building relationships with health care policy makers, patient stakeholders and other influencers Direct or indirect experience and knowledge of communications and public relations Education: Degree: Bachelors or above Field of study preference in Health Science, International Relations & Communications , Political Science or Economics or related Qualifications: Minimum of 5 years work experience in Government Affairs Strong knowledge of South Africa’s political, public & private healthcare environment and regulatory landscape Proven track record in strategy formulation through to execution An excellent communicator with an ability to influence decision making Competencies: Proven communication skills and the ability to influence at various organisational levels, both internally and externally The ability to develop, execute and realise the impact of multiple strategies concurrently, realising integration efforts, assigning activities and delegating key projects without losing business alignment or focus Flawless external stakeholder management, creating durable, transparent and meaningful relationships.
