Grad Intern - R&D (Machine Learning for Protein Design)

Live

This could be your everyday

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world.  During this program, you will join the Computational and Data Sciences Biologics Discovery Team and work on the development and application of Machine Learning algorithms to create models relevant to the design of therapeutic proteins and RNAs.  You will work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary team environment with data scientists and molecular engineers.  Your project will produce key technologies that support the discovery and optimization of large molecule therapeutics, including innovative multi-specific modalities across Amgen’s therapeutic areas.  This opportunity will let you see first-hand how early-stage large molecule drug development is conducted.

You will use Machine Learning to create models relevant to the design protein sequences.  The specific project will be based on your background and interests, but our team uses a variety of techniques, including generative models, transformers, reinforcement learning, multi-task learning, active learning, and sequential model-based optimization.  You will work with both historical and incoming data to develop and evaluate models. The ideal candidate will have a great foundation in Machine Learning theory, the ability to learn and implement/modify new techniques quickly, and proven experience in applied data science.  Experience with protein sequences and/or structures is a bonus.

Your specific responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Assist in data wrangling and cleaning
  • Use transformers to embed molecular sequences
  • Implement the data analysis pipelines
  • Evaluate different feature sets and Machine Learning methods
