Main purpose of job:

This is a dynamic role for an exceptional individual to join Department for International Trade (DIT) Hong Kong team as a Trade and Investment Adviser to help to advance the trade and investment ambitions articulated in the DIT Hong Kong Trade Plan.

The successful candidate will support UK healthcare and education companies in doing business in Hong Kong, Macau and, working alongside our team in China, the wider Greater Bay Area. This will be achieved through the delivery of trade missions, events and VIP visits.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate their ability to work both independently and with senior stakeholders, as well as their competence to develop skills in an international, commercial and government settings. Opportunities to expand their professional network may arise which strong interpersonal skills will also be an advantage.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Organisational support (50%)

  • Develop a broad understanding of the Healthcare and Education team’s objectives and develop relevant connections in the UK, Hong Kong and Macau. Building and maintaining positive relationships with UK exporters, trade associations, local importers, distributers and other stakeholders is an essential part of the role
  • Provide general administrative support to the Healthcare and Education team, including but not limited to data input, meeting and travel arrangements, database management, procurement management and performance tracking.
  • Assist in the event management of seminars, trade shows, networking functions and VIP visits. Support inward and outward business missions in terms of logistics and programme arrangement.
  • Undertake market research and build intelligence of trends and developments within the sectors
  • Represent the wider team and participate proactively in various communities and committees for feedback and suggestions
  • Identify opportunities to promote UK education/healthcare/life sciences products/services at events organised by other DIT colleagues, the wider Consulate or our partners and stakeholders.
  • Cover other advisers and undertake similar administrative work in other teams and sectors when required

Service delivery (50%)

  • Respond to both internal and commercial enquiries from UK, Hong Kong and Macau companies
  • Identify, draft and publish export opportunities on www.great.gov.uk, and update DIT’s Customer Relationship Management system
  • Responsible for the delivery of DIT’s Overseas Market Introductory Service. This is a tailored service for UK companies that can include but is not limited to conducting market research, business matching, and programme arranging and event management.

  • The jobholder may be required to travel. Some work (including travel) will be required during the evenings and occasionally weekends, for which time off in lieu (where applicable) will be given.
  • Successful candidate required to start as soon as possible.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

This is a supporting role with client-facing opportunities where outstanding organisational and communication skills are they key requirements for the role.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and English language skills with professional and diplomatic demeanour
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills, with strong ability to multi-task and deliver a high quality service, whilst meeting deadlines
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Personable and customer-service oriented
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills particularly in the use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • High self-motivation, flexible, resilient and proactive attitude
  • Appropriate residence status or a valid working visa in Hong Kong
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
  • Minimum of 2+ years of relevant full-time work experience
  • Broad knowledge of, or demonstrable interest in, the UK and Hong Kong’s Healthcare and Education systems
  • Experience of administrative support, marketing, event and budget management and/or business development
  • Cantonese and Mandarin will be an advantage
