This is an HSE Manager - NAS Hub role reporting to the Local Division Manager in the Business Area - Process Automation located in Shanghai or Beijing in China. As a HSE Manager, you will lead a team of HSE Specialists belonging to Hub Division and contribute to improving Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) performance in the respective organization to ensure an exemplary health and safety culture as well as a strong focus on the environment. Support the business by applying in-depth HSE knowledge to offer solutions and advice. Facilitate delivery of support from the Center of Expertise (CoE) and ensure effective risk management through HSE excellence along ABB’s value chain.
Your responsibilities
- Reporting Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) incidents. Sharing feedback on lessons learned and best practice from one’s own unit and across ABB to management and employees. Reporting on HSE performance and progress on implementation of ABB Group Sustainability objectives and key performance indicators (KPSs) to ABB Group, as required.
- Implementing policies and standards. Ensuring area of responsibility is audited according to program for audit. Assisting line managers and supervisors in understanding obligations, liability and how to fulfil their roles, according to local HSE law and ABB Group policy, instructions and standards. Supporting compliance with human rights, security and crisis management processes.
- Facilitating HSE risks assessment by line management involving shop floor employees, i.e. those directly concerned by the hazards, and ensuring all processes are implemented.
- Driving behavioral change through implementing Group-wide performance improvement programs and practices locally to ensure an exemplary health and safety culture as well as a strong focus on environment throughout the respective organization.
- Engaging external (e.g. customers, suppliers and other stakeholders) and internal stakeholders in order to report on, raising awareness and gaining commitment on ABB’s HSE efforts and performance and obtaining objective feedback. Cooperating with other functions, the (Center of Excellence) CoE and business partners to drive performance. Participating in defining the annual budget for area of responsibility and being accountable for managing performance against agreed financial targets and constraints.
- Ensuring appropriate HSE equipment and tools are available and used. Identifying, planning and initiating training need, e.g. for employees, site managers, contractors, site managers, and facilitating delivery of support from the CoE. Driving and ensuring compliance with Group management systems.
- Contributing to and/or planning and executing Health (and/or) Safety (and/or) Environment performance and Corporate Responsibility related projects. Developing and reporting on project objectives. Managing project resources such as manpower, financials and other relevant factors. Ensuring that the area of responsibility is appropriately organized, staffed, skilled and directed. Guiding, motivating and developing/indirect subordinates within HR policies.

Your background
- Engineering degree or diploma or equivalent by experience. Degree in HSE Management, Environmental Diploma IEMA or equivalent, NEBOSH Diploma or Local HSE Diploma/Certificate or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years of industry experience as an HSE professional as a lead auditor qualified in HSE.
- Must have fluent spoken and written English communication skills.
- Independent, self-motivated leader with a passion for HSE work. Assertive with a pragmatic approach and supporting the business with experience in delivering Safety and Environmental training.
- Chartered Member of IOSH (or equivalent), Associate Member of IEMA Preferred (or equivalent) are preferred.
- Preferred to have a working experience in an organization utilizing behavior-based safety approaches. Cultural leadership attitude to drive virtual, cross-country teams with an international mind-set. Experience in managing large and complex projects, with integration of automation and electrical part, field instrumentation and erection.
- Ability to travel as required (30-40%).
