Position Title: Head of EAL (English as an Additional Language)
Start:August 2026

Role Objective
We are looking for an experienced and committed Head of EAL to take charge of and advance the school's EAL provision. The successful candidate will ensure excellent teaching and learning outcomes for EAL students, facilitate their academic integration, and collaborate with staff to foster inclusive approaches that enable all learners to thrive.
Reporting Line
Directly reports to: Head of School
Working Relationships
Works in partnership with school leadership, curriculum coordinators, subject teachers, and support staff to design and implement effective EAL strategies across the institution.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Management
Direct the design, rollout, and review of the school's EAL programme
Set strategic direction for EAL delivery across all year groups
Supervise, guide, and develop EAL teachers and teaching assistants
Manage EAL scheduling, student grouping, and placement decisions
Ensure efficient deployment of EAL resources and support services
Teaching and Learning
Provide high-standard EAL instruction when needed
Assist subject teachers in adapting instruction for EAL learners
Champion inclusive pedagogical approaches across all disciplines
Demonstrate exemplary EAL teaching techniques and strategies
Facilitate the embedding of language development within the mainstream curriculum
Assessment and Monitoring
Supervise EAL assessment procedures, including initial screening and placement evaluations
Track and analyse students' language acquisition and academic advancement
Keep comprehensive records of EAL student development
Deliver regular progress updates to parents and school leadership
Utilise data to refine intervention approaches and enhance programme effectiveness
Curriculum Development
Shape and enhance the EAL curriculum to meet school standards and international benchmarks
Design and evaluate EAL teaching materials, resources, and intervention schemes
Ensure coherence between EAL support and mainstream curricular expectations
Student Support and Pastoral Care
Address the academic, linguistic, and social-emotional needs of EAL students
Identify learners who require additional language assistance and targeted intervention
Collaborate with pastoral teams to promote student wellbeing and successful integration
Cultivate an inclusive campus culture that appreciates linguistic diversity
Collaboration and Communication
Partner with subject teachers to advance language learning across the curriculum
Offer advice and training to staff on EAL best practices
Maintain clear and constructive communication with parents about student progress and language growth
Engage in staff meetings, curriculum planning sessions, and school events
Professional Development
Lead and take part in professional learning activities related to EAL education
Keep abreast of current research and evolving best practices in language acquisition and ESL/EAL pedagogy
Foster a culture of ongoing improvement within the EAL team and the broader school community
Role Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Education, English, Linguistics, or a related discipline
Recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, TESOL, TEFL, or equivalent)
Minimum of 5–8 years of teaching experience, including EAL/ESL background (leadership experience is advantageous)
Strong grounding in second language acquisition theories and methodologies
Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and team coordination capabilities
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills
Capacity to work effectively across departments and within diverse cultural settings
