Director of Boarding

The position of director of boarding is a role that balances leadership of both boarding staff and students, good knowledge of safeguarding and practical decision making under pressure. The DoB must have a clear vision of the mission of their boarding department. Only a passionate and committed professional can be considered suitable. Good interpersonal skills, initiative and genuine desire to see young people achieve their potential is crucial. A willingness to understand Chinese culture and international perspective is beneficial.

Leadership of the Boarding Team.
The DoB must lead his people by example. A high level of visibility is required to engender trust from the team and students alike. Frequent interaction with students is vital. DoB is firstly a hands on position. The DoB must be open, approachable, fair but firm in their dealings with all students and enjoy interaction with them. Due to the varied working hours and occasional stressful situations that occur naturally with any boarding program, a DoB must make a culture of comraderie and mutual respect a priority within the boarding team. A DoB must never ask a member of staff to fulfill a task that they are personally not prepared to deal with. The DoB must be a calm individual who is not easily phased by unexpected events or changes of plans.


Duties and expectations include
- Formulating and maintaining all policies related to boarding, pastoral and safeguarding.
- Have the provision of a safe living environment and well-being of the boarders as their primary concern.
-Care for the physical health of the boarders, including regular liaison with the school nurses and the emotional counselor.
- Authoring and updating the Boarding Staff and Border’s Handbook.
- Training, mentoring and furthering the career development of boarding staff. Provide appraisals.
- Overseeing the formulation of the boarding staff rota.
- Conducting and setting the agenda for boarding meetings.
- Fostering a culture of acceptable behavior and mutual respect in boarding life. Developing a boarding disciplinary matrix
- Overseeing the evening study program.
- Overseeing and supporting the school house system and related events
- Overseeing and supporting student leadership through the school prefect program.
- Overseeing rooming policy and changes, disputes.
- Ensuring a culture of documentation of all registration forms, incidents and disciplinary issues.
- Working closely with and reporting to the HoS on all relevant matters.
- Working closely with all operational departments
- Working closely with deans and teachers in all matters pertaining to boarding students.
- Encouraging and fostering a culture of English language use in the evening
- Overseeing and creating a rich evening non-academic sporting and club activities in ‘boarding time’.
- Conducting information sessions with students and parents where necessary
- Overseeing parent-boarding staff communication policies and activity. Encouraging a clear and open relationship with parents.
-Contributing to the newsletter with regard to boarding and pastoral matters.
- Being readily available to meet boarding parents.
- Overseeing the tidiness, hygiene and safety of the boarders living conditions.
-Ensure evacuation process are understood by staff and boarders alike. Conduct regular drills and record their results.
- Overseeing personally on occasion room searches where necessary.
- Must think strategically about the development of the boarding program.
