An exciting position has arisen in our Standards Policy Team, for a Head of Innovation Policy based in Chiswick London.

About the role:

To lead policy development and engagement in the field of innovation and digital and emerging technologies. The role will manage relationships with senior government and industry contacts, research institutions and higher education organizations, and influence public policy to support the role of standards in innovation.  This will be a key role in identifying and influencing opportunities for new funding and delivery models that will enhance the attractiveness of standards for industry, including SMEs and start-ups, working collaboratively across the various Knowledge Solutions teams and the wider BSI Group.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

 

  • Create a network of senior level contacts across government departments and delivery agencies, research establishments and academia to influence policy decisions to promote the use of standards and the role of BSI as the UK NSB.
  • Build a presence for BSI as the UK NSB within UK Parliament and policy think-tanks to promote the use of standards to support public policy in the areas of innovation and digital and emerging technologies.
  • Position BSI as a partner of choice for government, innovation agencies and higher education bodies to support the development of standards for new and emerging technologies and ensure the uptake of existing standards.
  • Working with colleagues in the marketing and PR teams, as well as partner organizations, plan and develop dissemination and outreach activities in the UK and worldwide to promote the role of standards to support innovation, and digital and emerging technologies.
  • Working with the standards development teams, define international standardization strategies to ensure that standards for innovation, and for digital and emerging technologies are developed and adopted internationally.
  • Lead the UK input into the innovation policies of European and International standards bodies, with a focus on the activities of CEN/BT STAIR, and the relationship with EU innovation policies.
  • Lead outreach to higher education, building relations and finding opportunities to strengthen the role of BSI and its standards to encourage the use of standards to support innovation, and in digital and emerging technologies.  Develop the strategy for engagement with university innovation spinout companies.
  • Ensure that the appropriate level of resource is established to deliver objectives and provide line management support, coaching and mentoring as required.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

 

  • Experience of emerging technology markets and exposure to the UK’s innovation landscape
  • Strong analytical and policy development skills
  • Understanding of public policy, especially as it relates to innovation, new technology and higher education sectors
  • Understand the role of standards in accelerating the development of new technologies and their market adoption
  • Experience of operating at a senior level in the international business environment
  • Strong strategic and commercial outlook
  • Outstanding communication and networking skills
  • Outstanding project and programme management skills
  • Proactive and flexible approach, ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
  • Experience of managing, coaching and developing staff
  • Budget control and reporting experience
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and beyond
