Job Title: Head of Pastoral Care
Reports to: Head of Secondary
Start date:ASAP& Spring 2026
Annual Salary Range: RMB 500,000 - 550,000 + Benefits
Job Purpose:
The Head of Pastoral Care will be an experienced senior leader with a proven and exemplary commitment to student welfare. The postholder will provide inspirational leadership, possessing the vision, presence, and foresight necessary to further develop and enhance the school's pastoral provision, ethos, and outstanding personalized care. This role involves leading on all pastoral systems, including setting and maintaining related policies. The successful candidate will be an empathetic relationship-builder with a sophisticated understanding and a proven track record of working effectively with diverse stakeholders to achieve excellence in all aspects of pastoral provision. As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Head of Pastoral Care will play a full role in shaping the strategic direction of the school, developing, personifying, and ensuring a whole-school ethos that promotes the institution's core values for all students, staff, governors, parents, and the wider community.
Key Responsibilities:
Pastoral Care
• Oversee and develop a culture of outstanding achievement, support, and recognition for students.
• Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (see Safeguarding section for details).
• Establish structures and systems to ensure all students receive the necessary support to flourish.
• Liaise with the Head of School and Deputy Head (Academic) to ensure the smooth daily operation of the school.
• Develop and manage the delivery of the Personal Development program.
• Oversee the overall provision of Pastoral Care within the school.
• Line manage the Pastoral Care team, which may include Counselors, Heads of Year, and Tutors.
• Monitor student pastoral progress closely and devise strategies to maximize each student's holistic potential.
• Manage processes related to student absences, including tracking, follow-up, and communication with staff and parents.
• Manage and implement policies concerning areas such as missing students, bullying, online safety, device usage, and general school routines.
• Chair regular pastoral or boarding meetings.
• Allocate tutors and oversee tutor development.
• Manage the quality and delivery of Pastoral Care and safeguarding training for staff.
• Line manage the counselling team to ensure wellbeing remains a central focus.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding legislation and best practices, informing the Senior Leadership Team accordingly.
• Oversee the updating of relevant school policies.
• Manage an agreed budget.
Discipline and Conduct
• Oversee standards of personal conduct throughout the school.
• Oversee the management and administration of pastoral and disciplinary procedures.
• Manage and update codes of conduct, discipline, and related policies.
• Manage the school's rewards and sanctions systems.
Safeguarding
• Serve as the first point of contact for all child protection matters for parents, pupils, staff, and external agencies.
• Act as a source of support, advice, and expertise for staff on safety and safeguarding, assisting with decisions regarding referrals to external agencies.
• Refer all cases of suspected abuse to the local relevant authority.
• Coordinate the child protection procedures for the school.
• Maintain an ongoing training program for all staff, board members, and volunteers, including induction and annual update training.
• Monitor the record-keeping, confidentiality, and storage of child protection records, ensuring they are maintained separately from general pupil files.
• Liaise with external authorities as necessary.
• Keep parents informed of actions taken under safeguarding procedures concerning their child.
• Liaise with the Head of School regarding any concerns or ongoing issues.
• Proactively monitor records of pupils who are regarded as a concern.
• Liaise with other professionals to facilitate early help and contribute to support plans for children with additional needs or those subject to child protection plans.
• Advise and act on all suspicions, concerns, or evidence regarding children needing additional support or who have suffered or are likely to suffer harm.
• Participate in child protection conferences or reviews where appropriate.
• Maintain records of staff training on child protection and safer recruitment procedures.
• Fulfill reporting duties to relevant safeguarding authorities if a staff member's services are terminated due to unsuitability to work with children.
• Monitor and review relevant safeguarding policies and practices.
Additional Responsibilities
• Contribute to the effective marketing of the school, which may include meeting parents, conducting tours, and leading promotional events.
• Develop innovative ways to contribute to student recruitment, collaborating with the Admissions Department to meet enrollment targets.
• Promote excellent home-school relations through both informal and formal processes, fostering strong and open communication.
• Actively establish and maintain good relations with parents and other visitors.
• Support and attend all major school events.
• Work to maintain effective community partnerships, promoting and representing the school at various levels.
• Collaborate with the Director of Experiential Learning to support high-quality co-curricular programs, including off-campus trips and the logistics of sports fixtures.
• Coordinate with the Director of Operations to ensure the robust and proactive implementation of Health and Safety policies and Safeguarding protocols.
• Keep abreast of local and international initiatives related to pastoral care, advising the Head and Governors on relevant developments and policies.
Salary & Benefits
Annual salary: RMB 500,000 – 550,000.
