Position

Heavy Equipment Operator

Must have minimum 3 years’ experience digging around existing utilities and/or utility construction experience. Must possess a valid CDL. May operate other types of power construction equipment, such as, dozers, excavators, backhoe, lo drill, pressure drill, 23 to 225 ton cranes, digger derricks, grapple truck, heavy haul semi and trailer, forklift, shovels, tractors, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement. May repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties. This position will work in the Augusta and Bangor, Maine Area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn and follow safety regulations.
  • Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects.
  • Start engines, move throttles, switches, or levers, or depress pedals to operate machines, such as track hoes, backhoes, digger derricks, lo-drill, air drill, forklift, cranes, skid steers, line pullers, or line tensioners.
  • Locate underground services, such as pipes or wires, prior to beginning work.
  • Align machines, cutter heads, or depth gauge makers with reference stakes and guidelines or ground or position equipment, following hand signals of other workers.
  • Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials, using trucks, crawler tractors, power cranes, shovels, graders, or related equipment.
  • Drive and maneuver equipment equipped with blades in successive passes over working areas to remove topsoil, vegetation, or rocks or to distribute and level earth or terrain.
  • Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
  • Excavate and drill holes
  • Right of Way clearing and reclamation
  • Direct and teach laborers and ground men
  • Greases, oils, and performs minor repairs on equipment, using grease gun, oilcans, and hand tools
  • Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
  • Read and interpret plans, instructions, and specifications to determine work activities
  • Control traffic passing near, in, and around work zones
  • Measure, mark, and record openings and distances to lay out areas where construction work will be performed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver License
  • Valid DOT Medical Certification
  • Experience digging around existing utilities
  • Travel required for continued employment
  • Pass pre-employment and other drug screenings
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Compliance with OSHA and other Federal, State, and local safety regulations
  • Three to five years of experience in heavy equipment operation
