Job Description

The Income Tax Lead is responsible for preparation, review, and/or management of the Tax Accounting, Provision, Compliance, and Planning processes for all BMW entities in the United States including, footnote disclosures, effective tax rate, current and deferred balance reconciliations, cash settlements, and timely filing of tax returns, estimates, and extensions. This role ensures accurate and timely reporting of the quarterly and year-end financial statements, adequate reserve balances and long-range planning, budgeting, forecasting and internal control documentation and testing. They also coordinate the flow of tax related documentation between the tax department and other departments and companies within the Group.

Key responsibilities:

  • Preparation of tax provisions for 20+ BMW entities in accordance with IFRS 12 and IFRIC 23 including financial statement tax disclosures, calculating the effective tax rate, current and deferred balance reconciliations, footnote disclosures, etc.  
  • Preparation and/or of monthly federal and state tax journal entries for current and deferred taxes.
  • Review, analyze, and document complex transactions recorded in tax balance sheet accounts while maintaining a tax basis balance sheet.
  • Provide recommendations cross functionally for tax and operations to streamline and improve tax processes related to the year-end tax provision, the management of the effective rate, and cash taxes and implement change.
  • Interface with external auditor to coordinate quarterly and annual reviews.
  • Identify opportunities within the reporting and compliance function to minimize tax liabilities and maximize tax profits.
  • Review and/or preparation of various federal, state, and international tax return workpapers some of which include vehicle lease portfolio workpapers, UNICAP, eliminations, fixed asset reporting, BEAT, 163j, etc.
  • Review and/or preparation of various tax forms including Forms 1120, 1120-F, 5472, 1042, FinCEN 114 (FBAR), W-8’s/W-9’s, 5500, etc. 
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory deadlines by filing estimates, extensions, and tax returns on a timely basis, ensuring the minimization of tax penalties and interest.
  • Analysis and valuation of company car fair market values.
  • Analyze, review, and continuously monitor all facets of the extensive tax depreciation and vehicle lease portfolio to ensure BMW compliance with strict IRS and state promulgated tax regulations.
  • Collaboratively research, analyze, interpret and apply US and international tax laws and principles for the impact on accounting for income taxes and compliance.
  • Interpret the impact of new tax laws, recommending and implementing tax planning strategies.
  • Perform global tax research and planning activities to optimize taxes and the effective tax rate and enhance cash flow.
  • Work collaboratively to identify opportunities to optimize BMW’s tax positions while effectively managing risk.
  • Implement new tax policies, strategies, and procedures to support tax and other cross-functional initiatives.

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a preference in Accounting, Tax, Finance or related field is required
  • MBA, CPA or Masters in tax is preferred 
  • Minimum of 5 years experience that includes leading and developing professional staff, tax provision, tax research, tax planning, tax compliance, process and system evaluation and development.
  • Extensive background in US Federal, State, and International income tax provision, compliance, and planning.
  • Experience in a multinational corporation or public accounting is preferred
  • Ability to understand accounting and tax concepts is required. 
  • Strong Project Management skills or experience in leading implementations is preferred
  • Experience collaborating with IT on larger scale projects is preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Strong Analytical skills and attention to detail is preferred
  • Ability to understand IT terminology is preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of PC based programs:  Excel (i.e. Pivot tables, VLOOKUPS functions, formulas) Word, PowerPoint, is preferred
  • Experience with Financial Reporting systems such as SAP is preferred.
