Industrial Design Director

The primary responsibility of the Industrial Design (ID) Director is building and maintaining functional excellence to be best in the world. Building and nurturing the ID organization and making sure that we have the right capabilities, capacity, skills and processes in place. This leader will work closely with the Creative Director, Director of Product Design and Product Design (PD) leadership to continually push the orgainization and Bose to be better.

This leader will also need to evolve the discipline of Industrial Design to not only be HW focused but create a culture where this team works closely with their PD and Product Communication Design (PCD) peers to take a more holistic view of Product Design. This evolution must not come at any expense to the high standards we have established within our Product Design Language.

  • Owning the ID capability and continually developing new skills to push the boundaries how we solve complex design problems
  • Develop new approaches based on industry best practices and drive continuous improvements 
  • Recruit, develop and retain world-class talent 
  • Promote the work of multi-discipline cross-functional teams in support of Double-Helix o
  • Establish and communicate effective design processes through a strong understanding of human centered design techniques coupled with practical experience in how ID teams should collaborate cross-functionally for maximum effectiveness and quality
  • Making sure that programs are properly staffed with the right talent and we are doing our best work for the divisions and categories
  • Develop and inspire teams within an environment of rapidly evolving, complex demands, including multiple projects with dependencies on other teams.
  • Work closely with the Creative Director and cross-functional leads to create and align a discipline strategy that supports our consumer’s needs, and delivers on the value of the brand and business goals

The ID Director will need to have a strong interface with the development functions within each division (with a special focus on Engineering and Manufacturing). This will ensure that the teams are working efficiently and effectively together. This will include making sure that our process and deliverables are servicing the division needs and we are making the appropriate adjustments to the work.

Shared Responsibilities

  • Ensure that PD has the capabilities and skills needed to drive the highest quality work. With that, there is a high degree of collaboration with the Creatives, Creative Director and across the PD functional leaders to both monitor the day to day work as well as understand any new skills or capabilities need to be built to service current or future needs.
  • This individual will also play an important role in creating a strong design culture within Product Design as well as build relationships across PCD.
  • Together with the other PD leaders, the Director of Industrial Design will collaborate on special projects and / or initiatives established by the Product Design Director, PD leaders or executives. 

Decision making

  • Defining best practices and tools for the ID organization  
  • Approves new hires and team assignments for all programs and categories / divisions
  • Establishing and maintaining the functional budget, along with finance and the Product Design Director
