Eaton’s Electrical Sector Distributed Energy Resource Management Solutions (DERMS) Center of Excellence is seeking a Lead Controls Engineer in our Montreal, Québec, Canada. Eaton is seeking a Lead Controls Engineer for its newly formed Distributed Energy Resource Management Solutions (DERMS) Center of Excellence (CoE). Eaton’s DERMS CoE accelerates the company’s growth by building state machining logic for DER grid codes in the European and North American region and building blocks that are scalable, cost-effective, and manufacturable as well as standardized design methodologies that can be adopted by multiple businesses (e.g. UPS, microgrid controls, Energy storage, etc.), which provides a foundation for our business to more rapidly develop innovative products. This individual will be responsible for supporting control development, implementation, and validation for a wide spectrum of power conversion and protection products. This individual will be also responsible for executing plans for the use and adoption of model-based technique during the NPI process. This includes the use Hardware in the Loop (HIL) methodologies during the design and validation on new products within the Eaton’s product portfolio. This individual will be a key member of the DERMS CoE and will directly report to the global DERMS CoE manager and functionally to the Technical Manager – DERMS Controls Making what matters work at Eaton takes the passion of every employee around the world. In this function you will: Develop control and protection algorithms and firmware for microgrids or Distributed Energy Resources (DER) inverters in UPS and battery storage Perform modeling and simulation for the power converters control development Implements, tests, and troubleshoots control firmware Establish system & sub-system level control requirements from functional specifications and application needs Plan and perform control algorithms and firmware development and validation on HIL and lab Create technical reports and presentations Initiate and lead design reviews and technical discussions including brainstorming Stay current with the latest technologies trends and applies knowledge to the development of control firmware for power converters When we embrace the different ideas, perspectives and backgrounds that make each of us unique, we — as individuals and as a company — are stronger. Qualifications Required (Basic) Qualifications: MS in electrical or computer engineering with a minimum of 2 years experience or PhD in electrical or computer engineering with no commercial experience Minimum 2 years of related engineering experience in the control algorithm development and implementation for microgrids or DER inverters. Experience can be found in academic lab, commercial, or any combination thereof. Strong background in digital control and power electronic control techniques, such as P & Q control MATLAB and Simulink experience Preferred qualifications: PhD in electrical engineering or computer engineering or equivalent. Experience with embedded software structuring and C/C++ programming Knowledge of power electronics hardware Working knowledge of HIL HW and SW Experience in developing and implementing DER inverter control with auto-code generation tools (e.g., Simulink Coder) Experience with DSP, FPGA, or microcontrollers, and standard peripheral components Familiarity with development tools such as compilers and debuggers Demonstrated knowledge of engineering processes Modbus, Campus, Typhoon, and/or Opal RT, HIL experience Desire for innovation, new product development Experience with Agile Development Processes IEEE 1547 Standards experience Familiarity with IEEE 1547, UL 1741 SA/SB, and IEC 61850-7-420 standards for grid codes. MATLAB experience with advanced DER inverter controls functions.
