Position Overview

Our part-time Instrumental Instructors focus on providing high quality age and ability-appropriate one-to-one lessons. When required, this team of instrumental instructors will be asked to provide ensemble support for our full-time staff. As an instructor, you genuinely enjoy the company of children and are passionate about developing a relationship and sense of trust with each student.

Responsibilities

1. Teach your instrument(s) to either individuals or small groups:

  • Create an environment of active and genuine learning by employing a range of teaching strategies that meet the needs of all students.
  • Monitor each student's progress and effort and keep the student and parents informed of progress using the Practice Journal and other communication methods.
  • Keep accurate records of achievement and attendance in order to provide meaningful reports and parent communications as required.
  • Maintain your instrumental area by; regularly checking equipment and your teaching area for possible damage, updating asset records, obtaining quotes for repair and keeping in regular communication with the Performing Arts Team.
2. Participate in Whittle's ensemble programme as requested:
  • Prepare your instrumental students either as soloists or ensemble members for the various performances that occur throughout the year.
  • Assist in rehearsals and sectionals or assume responsibility and direction of your own ensemble(s).
3. Maintain your own skill and knowledge in Music, teaching, and your instrument(s):

  • Actively pursue the development and improvement of your instrumental area by accessing and implementing up to date teaching methods and curriculum tools. Utilise Information and Learning Technologies as appropriate to your instrument(s).
  • Seek regular professional development opportunities such as attending appropriate seminars and courses.
  • Participate in Whittle's professional development programmes including the development and evaluation of curriculum, programmes and resources for the implementation of the curriculum.
Qualifications and Attributes

Whittle Studios values innovation, risk-taking, and an entrepreneurial spirit. The following are highly desirable qualifications for the listed position:

  • Bachelor's degree in specific field or postgraduate work in subject matter required. Master's level degree or above in content area preferred.
  • Linguistic proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and English highly desirable.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in teaching international music qualifications such as ABRSM, Rock School, London College of Music, Chinese Music Exams etc.
  • Previous conducting/directing skills are desirable.
  • Actively and systematically pursues professional growth in content mastery, pedagogical skills, and as responsible local and global community members.
  • Models positive behaviours for students and colleagues that align with the school's core values, emphasizing critical social and emotional skills such as empathy, humility, and ethics.
  • Monitors his/her own belief and behaviour to make certain that high expectations are expected of all students regardless of socioeconomic status, race, gender or other personal characteristics.
  • Participates in professional learning communities, grade level teams, and other collaborative communities to design and plan instructions, to improve practice, and to achieve student outcomes.
  • Maintains professional collegial relationships that encourage sharing, planning, and working together toward improved instructional skill and student success.

Whittle School & Studios offers our staff very competitive total compensation packages that are either at or above market, depending on the position.
