Job Overview
Provide general instrumentation support (test cell and engine systems) to the Daimler-Detroit Diesel Powertrain Engineering Laboratory. Duties of an Instrumentation technician encompass a wide range of responsibilities including modifying, fabricating, maintaining and calibrating a variety of instrumentation test cell equipment. This includes, but is not limited to the following systems such as fuel measurement systems, air flow measurement systems, data acquisitions systems and engine dynamometer control systems. This position requires fundamental knowledge and system level expertise to troubleshoot, identify and repair test cell instrumentation equipment. This position requires the individual to complete task in a timely manner to maintain the engineering laboratory productivity efficiency level at or above the target performance goal. This position requires the individual to develop and maintain good interpersonal skills, as interfacing with other technician and engineering personnel is required. Additionally, this position may at times require communication with outside vendors and collaboration within the global Daimler AG engineering organization.
Responsibilities
• Have a fundamental understanding of data acquisition systems.
• Perform calibrations on a variety of test cell instrumentation equipment, such as, pressure sensors, temperature sensors, fuel measurement systems, air flow measurement systems and engine dynamometers.
• Methodically troubleshoot and identify problems with test cell instrumentation equipment.
• Perform system modifications and upgrades on existing instrumentation equipment and generate specification documentation for corporate memory.
• Fabricate instrumentation related control panels required to support product development within the test cell environment. This includes equipment panels for engine control, dynamometer closed loop control, safety system control and other vehicle simulated control system panels.
• Generate operating and calibration procedures for all instrumentation equipment for training, standard traceability and regulatory audit requirements.
• Interface with outside vendor and equipment service personnel.
• Ability to document project task progress and maintain records for corporate memory.
• Generate and submit equipment purchase requisitions for management approval.
• A minimum of a two-year associate’s degree in electronics, engineering or equivalent experience in the instrumentation engine testing field.
• Strong knowledge of test cell data acquisition systems.
• Computer skills (MS Office), SharePoint, Salesforce, E-mail (MS Outlook).
• Demonstrated ability to interpret electrical diagrams and flow schematics.
• Mechanical and fabrication skills.
• Strong knowledge of electrical circuits and schematics.
• Strong organizational and follow-up skills.
• Good communication skills (Cell Phone, Text, E-mail).
• Occasionally required to move engine components or test equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, work on step ladders, handle cryogenic liquids and compressed gases.
