ROLE SUMMARY
Responsible for providing counseling services for the school and students. This is a permanent full time support staff role.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Counseling
• Provide confidential personal counseling for students as individuals and groups
• Work with families as and when necessary
• Maintain and monitor effective referral mechanism, both for teachers and students
• Liaise with student development staff to ensure effective flow of information
• Employ appropriate assessment and screening tools
• Work with Health & Wellness group and student development teams to develop and implement health and well-being programmes
Community support
• Advise and assist in developing appropriate Health, Safety and Environment content and opportunities
• Identify and respond to trends in student need
• Work with School Learning Development Team and the Strategic Leadership Team as required
• Develop and maintain relationships with government and community support services
• Perform other duties and assume accountabilities as apparent or as delegated, including mutually agreed upon objectives

Requirements
EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor degree (postgraduate qualifications preferred)
• Recognised Higher Degree in counseling, social work, educational psychology or other relevant discipline
• Professional registration with recognised body
• Up to 8 years post-qualification practice with young people, preferably in an international school setting
ABILITIES
• Native English speaker or near native level
• Understanding and respect for confidentiality of service
• Willingness to maintain professional competency through professional development and networking
• A consideration of different cultural sensitivities and approaches to HSE topics
• A sound understanding of, and ability to work within, an existing counselors Code of Ethics
• Ability to communicate effectively with a range of people and institutions, including teachers, parents, students, social worker, associated professionals, government agencies and NGOs
KNOWLEDGE
• Ability to employ screening suitable for school context
• Sound understanding of relevant policies and procedures
• Role of external agencies and ability to refer when required
• A working understanding of the IB programmes
COMPETENCIES
• Ability to work independently with accuracy and attention to detail
• Flexible approach towards non standard work hours occasionally (through attendance and organisation of Family Counseling and other counseling related school events)
• A friendly, approachable manner in relation to staff and student users is essential
• Ability to adapt to new situations and to learn new skills is essential
• Ability to work effectively under pressure is essential
• Good team worker is essential.
• The school’s aims and code of conduct should be embraced and promoted. West Island School’s policies should be adhered to at all times whilst ensuring safe working practices are followed in accordance with the school’s policies relating to Health and Safety
