LV Desktop Publisher (Linguistic Validation)

 

Primary Purpose

Under the general supervision of LV Technical Services Management, the LV Desktop Publisher is a key member of the LV Technical Services team. The Desktop Publisher works with the Technical Services Team, LV Project Planning, and LV Project Management to deliver desktop publishing services for client deliverables.

Working in a variety of languages and with documents of varying complexity, scope, and technology requirements, the LV Desktop Publisher’s primary responsibility is to evaluate project materials and instructions, assess most efficient and cost-effective DTP service processes to be used, and implement these processes with primarily outsourced and at times in-house resources. The LV Desktop Publisher must ensure the appropriate level of cost, quality and timeliness is met as detailed by the Project Planner’s and client’s specifications.

The role will allocate the required project resources, will assist in ensuring the quality and timeliness of the deliveries, and will assist in preparing regular reports to the internal team on the status of the projects. The LV Desktop Publisher will provide feedback to the vendor management team on the performance of vendors, and will contact, and work with vendors directly to solve any issues when required.

The LV Desktop Publisher will monitor desktop publishing trends and technologies, may work with linguists, LV Project Planners and Project Managers on queries, will monitor and mitigate project risks, will support Project Managers and other team members in the planning or update of a project and the overall cost associated with it. The LV Desktop Publisher will create, update, and revise work instructions and SOPs as approved by department manager.

Essential Functions

Production Operations

  • Understands and adheres to company Quality Management System (QMS) requirements including but not limited to all certified ISO standards.
  • Utilizes strategies for utilization of automation technology and CAT tools to increase production efficiency and quality of deliverables.
  • Reviews, analyzes and processes documents of different file types and varying complexity (e.g., xml, json, ivt, Excel, etc.) using appropriate programs/tools as specified by clients in a wide range of languages, making sure that the original design and layout is maintained as near as possible.
  • Troubleshoots and problem-solves document or file issues such as fonts, artwork or other depictions, graphs, tables, etc., and determine best course of action.
  • Troubleshoots and problem solves production automation and translation memory issues such as extraction and reintegration of translatable content and translation leveraging.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date client files, databases, archives, or records as needed.
  • Evaluates DTP task requirements and suggest best resources to accommodate task time and budget requirements.
  • Outsources and monitors DTP project tasks by choosing appropriate approved vendors.
  • Manages outsourced DTP tasks and vendors through communication and periodic checks to insure adherence to agreed terms, conditions and expected levels of quality.
  • Ensures quality and timeliness of DTP vendor deliveries through appropriate planning, communication and follow up.
  • Reviews, analyzes and provides feedback related to internal and outsourced DTP work through sampling of deliverables to insure expected levels of quality are met and delivered prior to task completion and hand-off.
  • Prioritizes personal, team and vendor workload and communicates scheduling to LV Desktop Publisher Supervisor and LV Technical Services team.
  • Completes project risk analysis and defines mitigation actions of the risks identified within the LV Technical File Inspection.
  • May communicate directly with clients to consult on process creation or improvements.
  • Occasionally organizes and leads meetings, records and distributes meeting minutes, and monitors delivery of agreed action items.
  • Participates in the review and discussion of client feedback to support investigations and response generation.
  • Receives, reviews and researches technical queries provides timely response.
  • Serves as an initial point of escalation for issue resolution.

Resource Coordination

  • Works closely with LV project Planners, Project Managers, vendors and LV Technical Services team to accomplish project tasks.
  • Evaluates vendor performance including quality, delivery and technical capability. .
  • Utilizes electronic performance monitoring system to provide feedback to Vendor Relations team regarding external resource performance.
  • May provide training to vendors in processes that reflect RWS process requirements and client needs.
  • Proactively alerts all stakeholders of task problems to include incorrect scoping, vendor delays and scheduling inconsistencies and recommends corrective course of action.
  • Ensures that vendors and Project Managers have necessary information to successfully complete tasks within timelines, budgets and levels of quality or are made aware of problem for corrective actions to be implemented.

Teamwork

  • Contributes to and assists with coordination of completion of large and/or complex client projects on a regular basis with internal and external resources.
  • Monitors the DTP industry and client industry trends.
  • Recommends to the LV Desktop Publisher Supervisor process and procedure changes to improve efficiency, quality and cost effectiveness.
  • May review and update QMS documentation to ensure process specific information is recorded and shared by the LV Technical Services team.
  • Occasionally coordinates and leads implementation of process changes under supervision of a senior LV Technical Services team member.
  • Provide and record constructive feedback in a timely manner to LV Project Managers, LV Project Planners, other LV Desktop Publishers, and vendors to improve efficiency, effectiveness and cost.

Additional Duties

  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective completion and shipment of projects.

Work Schedules

  • Twelve months per year standard work schedule as needed to successfully meet individual and department goals and objectives, and meet employee and client needs, including a reasonable number of additional hours as necessary.

  • Knowledge of desktop publishing procedures.

  • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CRM, CAT tools, Office 365/Skype). Familiarity with PC and Mac platforms.
  • Knowledge of localization production automation and QA tools and techniques including but not limited to SDL Studio (Trados), proprietary CTi automation tools, 3rd- party QA tools (Verifika, TQAuditor), text and XML editors, macros, and file comparison tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve job-related issues.
  • Ability to clearly explain technical issues and their resolution to others.

Qualification Profile

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skills and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • Two-year Associate degree or equivalent technical certification in related field.
  • Demonstrated skills and successful experience with desktop publishing applications including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Illustrator, minimum two year(s).
  • Minimum one years’ experience with XML and JSON.
  • DTP experience within the localization or translation industry, minimum of one year.
  • Experience with DTP outsourcing, scheduling and external vendor QA management, a minimum of one year.
  • Experience with translation memory (TM) and localization tools (CAT), minimum of one year.
  • Two years’ experience preferred using localization production automation and QA tools and techniques including but not limited to SDL Studio (Trados), proprietary CTi automation tools, 3rd-party QA tools (Verifika, TQAuditor), text and XML editors, macros, and file comparison tools.
  • Successful customer service experience, generally a minimum of one year.
  • Verbal and written fluency in at least one foreign language a plus.
