Laboratory Animal Technician (1 Year Contract)

Location: Burnaby, BC

Flexibility to work occasional weekends and holidays on rotation.

What you will do
 

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world! In this vital role you will support animal-based studies, husbandry, and vivarium operations and also act as a back-up for technical and lab support for in-vivo research.
 

Responsibilities

  • Perform husbandry activities such as changing cages, cage wash, facility sanitation, and maintenance activities.

  • Assist in performing veterinary health triage and monitoring as needed.

  • Handling and restraint of rodents.

  • Support crucial vivarium operations, 5S (lean management), and inventory management.

  • Develop technical competence and proficiency with in vivo methods (e.g., dosing, sample collection, physiological monitoring) and lab procedures for animal models; apply these skills to study execution or animal health care monitoring.

  • Collaborate with management, veterinarians, peers and research partners to support vivarium operations and in-vivo studies.

  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of opportunistic disease transmission, prevention, and control principles (i.e. biosecurity).

  • Ability to recognize technical problems and offer solutions.

  • Recognize and respond to facility alarms.

  • Follow guidance documents, procedures, methods, and study protocols to provide support for animal-based studies.

  • Assist in daily planning and scheduling for multiple work areas; able to coordinate and prioritize work schedule.

  • Implement data management and documentation practices.

  • Establish effective work relationships within group and participate in teams.

Basic Qualifications:

  • College diploma and 2 years of laboratory animal handling experience
    OR

  • High school diploma / GED and 4 years of laboratory animal handling experience

  • Candidate must be comfortable with regular lifting and/or moving of up to 50lbs /20 kg of items such as food and bedding bags, and racks of animals and supplies.
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified ARLAT by AALAS/CALAS (Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science) with plans to complete the RLAT certification within 2 years, or as experience in research domain allows.

  • Certified RVT (Registered Veterinary Technologist/Technician)

  • At least 2 years experience in a research environment with experience in vivarium operations.

  • Strong attention to detail and organized

  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective communication and that contribute to a friendly work environment.

  • Able to work with independently to achieve work goals

  • Must demonstrate accountability and ethics in performance of daily responsibilities.
