PURPOSE OF THE POST:

This post will provide research support to PI’s research projects in biomolecular science as directed by academic staff and the General Laboratory Manager which includes general lab management and supervision of undergraduate lab experiments and technical training of new MRS , PhD students and others etc.

MAIN AREAS OF WORK:

• Provide research support to PI’s research projects. Such support would include using molecular biology and cellular techniques such as qRT-PCR, DNA subcloning, cDNA transformation, DNA, RNA and protein isolation; cell culture and DNA transfections; and measurement of protein expression, phosphorylation and dephosphorylation, protein-protein interaction through co-immunoprecipitaion/western blotting, confocal image and nanoBRET analyses, mRNA purification, measurement of mRNA methylation, flow cytometry analysis etc.
• To undertake research projects within the scope of the PI’s research programmes. The post holder will manage his/her own research projects, including setting up techniques and producing high quality results on time.
• Shared maintenance of cell culture facility with other research support staff.
• Computation, graphing and analysis of results.
• Presentation and discussion of results at meetings with Supervisor and Group members.
• Meticulous recording of samples, stocks, procedures and results.
• Complying with and implementing all health and safety procedures including COSSH and risk assessments.
• General laboratory “housekeeping” duties.
• Assisting with technical training and supervision of new staff and PhD students in the group.

EDUCATION:

Completion of BSc or Master’s degree in biochemistry, cell biology or biomedical science-related fields. (Legible copies of transcripts verifying coursework and degree must be included. Official transcripts will be required upon employment.)

LANGUAGE:

English: high level skills in reading, speaking and, ideally, writing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Good basic scientific background, formal qualifications either a BSc or MSc in a biomedical science. Be able to read and understand projects-related literature and methodologies/ techniques.

• An interest in and understanding of molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, pharmacology and virology. High motivation in research is essential.

• Experience in any of the following would be beneficial, but not essential: cell culture/gene transfections; basic molecular biology such as cell culture, site-directed mutagenesis, gene cloning, DNA/RNA/protein isolation, western blotting, quantitative PCR, immunohistochemically staining, ELISA; microscopy and confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, nanoBRET etc. Extensive experience is not required as full training would be given whilst in post.

• Good organisational and time management skills, ability to communicate orally and in writing. Experience in computing is essential.

ABILITY TO:
Report observations of ongoing tests to the supervisors; Learn principles, practices, and environmental health and safety regulations applicable in the disposal of hazardous materials; learn budget and revenue control methods used in the District and assist in budget preparation activities; generate and maintain accurate computerized records, databases, reports and files; use hand and power tools in the maintenance of laboratory instruments, equipment and systems; learn and comply with all safety practices applicable to laboratory operations; set up lab equipment and materials used in exercises and experiments; safely handle, store and dispose of hazardous materials; use universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens; promote and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently in carrying out assignments of position.

Candidate must demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community university students, staff and the community.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Requires the ability to exert some physical effort, such as walking, standing and light lifting; dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs and body in the operation of laboratory and office equipment. Tasks require extended periods of time at a keyboard.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal laboratory, biosafety level 2 laboratory, and office environment.
