Job Description

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Substantially support the development of a sustainable discovery and early development portfolio in the field of ophthalmology in close interaction with other (pre-)clinical functions
  • Contribute to the achievement of yearly research deliverables: Characterization of preclinical candidates and clinical compounds in relevant eye disease models, act as preclinical pharmacology expert in support of Global Project Teams
  • Support pipeline building activities through evaluation of external assets, incl. participation in due diligences and/or in external collaborations with academia & industry
  • Establish and steer strategic collaborations to explore new fields of strategic relevance for Bayer, with a focus on back-of-the-eye diseases
  • Expand project space for new therapeutic modalities, incl. cell and/or gene therapy
  • Develop, establish and oversee ophthalmology research indication expansion in alignment with other functions e.g. Clinical Sciences, Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, and Strategic Marketing
  • Embed compliance as fundamental business principle within the organization
     

    WHO YOU ARE
     
  • University degree: Ph.D. in biochemistry, pharmacology, biology, medicine or equivalent with proven track record in preclinical pharmacology in Pharma or academic setting
  • Excellent understanding of ophthalmology, from patients’ & physicians’ needs to basic research in ophthalmology including in depth-understanding of pathophysiology of eye diseases
  • Proven track record in successful application of preclinical ophthalmology models incl. ophthalmology imaging modalities and its translation into early development
  • Expertise in neurodegeneration and back-of-the eye-disease is desired as well as in innovative therapeutic modalities including knowledge on cell and gene targeting is a clear plus
  • Successfully progressed own research ideas from concept into drug development projects
  • Experience in leading a team of lab technicians
  • Strong analytical skills and proven ability to work independently with strong personal drive and curiosity to explore and implement new ways of working along with good emotional skills and personal insights with excellent networking abilities
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken, willingness to learn German is a plus
