We have an opportunity for a Medical Operations Lead to join our Medical Affairs team. In this role, you will drive strategic and operational support and guidance to the Affiliate Medical Director and as a key member of Medical Leadership Team (MLT). Resourcing, and execution of the functional, operational, and financial priorities ensuring alignment with overarching Global Medical Affairs (GMA) and Area and key stakeholder projects and strategies. This position is based in Montreal and reports to the Affiliate Medical Director. Key responsibilities Establish vision, strategy, and goals that are aligned with the Medical Operations team’s business objectives. Optimize utilization of resources to lead, develop and coach the team, including overseeing the performance management process, professional development, and succession team plans. Build an inclusive culture. Proactively ensure understanding of AbbVie’s business model and help influence decisions, while building partnerships with the commercial and R&D teams. Meet our Global and International teams’ needs to maximize the impact of the solutions offered by the Medical Affairs team. Lead solutions that create organizational efficiencies, and effectively communicate design & process improvements to different audiences. Communicate and champion the leadership vision, mission, and objectives of the Canadian Affiliate to the International and Global Medical Operations teams. Provide leadership for the development, design, implementation, and improvement of local operations, systems, and processes (e.g., forums and information exchange, medical systems, business analysis and process management). Provide support to cross-functional business leaders and stakeholders regarding medical processes, solutions, and initiatives. Lead the annual strategic planning processes for the Medical Affairs team, ensuring that goals are aligned among all applicable AbbVie internal and external stakeholders. Partner with our Medical Director and Finance business partner in tracking the annual plan and budget versus actual; May assist the Medical Director to highlight, plan, identify and manage the factors driving key variances. Co-chair the local scientific review committee in terms of evidence generation. Liaise with various research functions within the AbbVie Global and local Medical Affairs teams (e.g., Site Management & Monitoring ) to consolidate the overall evidence generation plan for the Canadian Affiliate and ensure understanding of and visibility of the clinical studies being executed, including study status and progress towards major milestones and budget targets. Understand key timelines and action items for product launches and serve as a resource for operational aspects to Medical Affairs teams. Act as a medical operation expert for new or emerging therapeutic areas (TA)from a structure and resource perspective. Partner with the Medical Director on core governance bodies and affiliate-wide communications (i.e., Medical Leadership forums) by supporting the team to develop the scope and agenda, identify contributors, ensure clear understanding of requirements and expectations, and track key decisions and action items. Oversee the operations and overall implementation of key initiatives, including timelines, and workload/resources. Harmonize medical activities by identifying and promoting best practices within (and across) the therapeutic areas and driving adoption and utilization of existing tools and resources available. Evidence generation Manage the process of development, implementation and monitoring of local clinical trials and evidence generation projects, from their conception to approval of the final report, in accordance with current national and international standards and regulations, including AbbVie's procedures and policies. Lead the development and execution of the different types of evidence generation: non-interventional, pharmacoeconomic epidemiological, and real-world evidence studies. Manage the selection process of research centres and researchers, ensuring the engagement of physicians and scientific institutions, in accordance with our corporate strategy. Support medical managers with evidence generation projects, ensuring alignment with Global and local product strategies, Ensure that all evidence generation procedures comply with current regulations and standard operating procedures (local and global). Manage the planning and budget of evidence generation projects, investigator-initiated studies and pre-approval access (PAA) programs, as well as adequate payment of researchers, research centres and service providers. Lead the regulatory approval process, import, implementation, and execution of PAA programs. Head scientific partnerships with medical institutions and societies for scientific records, non-interventional studies, database analysis and other projects involving external stakeholders. Qualifications Education / Experience required Bachelor’s degree or higher is preferred. A degree in a scientific-related discipline is required. Relevant experience with solid knowledge of the biotech/pharmaceutical industry: Relevant departmental or regional Medical Affairs experience leading teams of processionals experience is required. Experience in a senior role (minimum of ten to twelve years). Business operations, project management, or related experience (minimum of ten years). Experience leading cross-functional teams virtually. Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and matrix environment. Proven track record in medical leadership, management, coaching individuals and teams, across multiple brands (minimum of seven years). Advanced knowledge of standard business procedures including project management, finance, and budgeting. Ability to build strong relationships with external experts and other relevant stakeholders. Expertise to think and plan strategically (work plans, activities, timetables, targeting) and translate strategies into realistic actions with execution excellence. Strong commitment to compliance, scientific quality, and integrity. Solid working knowledge of health care environment and evolving landscape. Demonstrated organizational and analytical skills to set priorities, develop a field work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track data, information, and activities. Effectively manage budgets to deliver on fiscal commitments. Essential skills and abilities Advanced French (for Quebec-based roles) and English language proficiency (oral and written). Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.). Must be at ease with technology (the use of various tools/systems to perform day-to-day tasks). Key leadership competencies Demonstrate strong business insights of key Affiliate strategies impacting the business priorities and overall financials, working closely with the Finance team. Solid leadership skills with broad business orientation. Ability to command the respect and support of the AbbVie international medical and marketing communities. Excellent communication, networking, and negotiation skills. Conflict- and problem-solving competencies. Ability to adapt to a changing environment and willingness to assess and implement new ideas and opportunities. Self-starter with the ability to work unsupervised towards the achievement of challenging goals. Sound judgment, strong planning and organizational skills, and the ability to get things done.
