Job Description
A small private English training center is looking for a couple of teachers to take classes for its winter holiday term. We have positions open for the spring terms as well, so this could be a short-commitment or long-commitment opportunity.
Location: We have three centers: Chaotian Rd, Guangyuan Xincun (Main center), Huangshi East Rd. (all centers close to subway or convenient bus stops).
Students: Chaotian Rd- Primary school; Huangshi Rd- Middle school; Guangyuan Xincun- primary, middle and high school. Classrooms can seat 16-30 students but actual class sizes will likely be smaller. Generally the students’ level of English is not high when they come to us. It is our job to provide them with a course of study to change that.
Time commitment: The winter term includes 12 days of teaching divided on either side of Chinese New Year. Classes run Jan 19-25 and (with the same group of students) Feb 9-13. No commitments from Jan 26 to Feb 8 so you can anything you want. Full schedule is 6 hours of class each day (three 2-hour classes, you see the same students every day). Some of these classes you will do on your own, others in conjunction with Chinese teachers. If you are interested in a lower number of hours let us know, part-time opportunities may be available, but dates are not negotiable. The spring term teaching schedule is more flexible and you can take classes at any of our three centers on weekends or evenings during the week.
The teaching: We have material available that follows the curriculum followed by students in their schools and we also have other teaching materials available to help you with your class planning. You will meet with the academic coordinator of the school (American) and discuss teaching goals and class expectations, and after that you are free to follow your own teaching style. You will also be asked to assist Chinese teachers with some aspects of their class planning and some classes will be taught jointly with Chinese and foreign teachers. We would like to include a variety of activities that work on reading, pronunciation, vocabulary acquisition and practice, multimedia and interactive spoken English skill development.
The pay: 8,000 RMB for 12 days of teaching. Pay is in cash, 4,000 given at the end of day on Jan 25th (enjoy your holiday) and 4,000 upon completion of the winter term on Feb 8th. If you are interested in a lower number of hours we can see what we have available and an hourly rate can be negotiated. Payment for long-term employment will be discussed later if you are interested.

The philosophy of the center will be explained in depth during the training period but essentially it goes like this: teaching is not a particular form of activity or particular thing you do, it is whatever causes learning to take place. If there is no real learning then there was no real teaching going on. Learning requires introduction to knowledge, active participation in many varied forms and appropriate tasks and guidance, all with the desired goal of getting people to internalize what they have learned. Language teaching is also a platform to discuss new ideas and foster creativity. Interaction is key.
The center is currently undergoing a change in the way it delivers classes. Applicants interested in long-term positions should be interested in helping create a more interactive, more interesting, more effective system to facilitate learning as part of a team of Chinese and foreign teachers.
About you: You should have a command of the English language and be comfortable teaching, although you do not have to be native speaker or possess any particular certification. You should be serious about the job and care about education. Teaching experience is preferred. You should be willing to sit down with the academic coordinator and discuss the center’s teaching philosophy, your approach to teaching and your plan for the 12-day winter term. Applicants interested in long-term employment will be considered along other criteria as well.
