Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Installations and Displays, the job holder will lead a team of art technicians and work closely with external contractors  to ensure safe handling, installation, lighting, packing, transport and storage of works of art for M+ Museum. This team will work alongside the production team to ensure the works of art are installed according to plan and in good condition. 

 

You will be responsible for: 

  • managing and coordinating key phases of the handling and installation of works of art for collection displays and special exhibitions;
  • recruiting, supervising, training and developing the Art Technicians team, overseeing daily team operations and aligning team values and goals with the museum;
  • working in close coordination with the exhibitions production team to build relationships, trust and workflows between two teams to ensure maximum efficiency and minimizing risk to art displays and installations;
  • managing day-to-day resources including scheduling in close coordination with Exhibition Managers and Registrars, and assisting Senior Manager to develop installation and budget plans;
  • collaborating closely with Registration team to provide support to collection management activities and display changeover ensuring proper scheduling and accurate documentation;
  • ensuring all Occupational Health and Safety measures are well understood and adhered to in place and actively maintained and recorded throughout the installation and (de)installation process on the premises;
  • assisting Senior Manager on the creation of policies and procedures for art handling and storage;
  • ensuring workshops, equipment and materials, storage areas and loading docks are kept in order;
  • liaising with other relevant departments within the Authority regularly to ensure all safety protocols are followed; and
  • providing ad hoc support to supervisor when necessary.

 

You should:

  • possess a recognised university degree in art, design, museum studies or related disciplines;
  • have at least 8 years of experience working in art handling or exhibition installation in museum or gallery with preferably 3 years in supervisory role and proven management skills;
  • have strong project and resource management skill in order to ensure staff and resources are well allocated;
  • have comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of art handling and installation techniques, tools and equipment as well as market practices;
  • have experience with budget tracking and reporting as well as complying with sophisticated procurement protocols and systems;
  • demonstrate a flexible approach to meeting changing priorities and demands, be able to remain calm under pressure;
  • have solid people management skills through effective mentoring and delegation to empower;
  • have strong organisational and problem-solving skills, be patient and detail-oriented;
  • be able to collaborate with others effectively in a diversified team and culture;
  • have good computer skills including Microsoft Office preferably with good knowledge of computerised collection management database and Microsoft Project;
  • have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and preferably in Chinese; and
  • be required to work in irregular hours, weekend and public holidays when deemed necessary.
