Position Overview: Eaton’s Energy Automation Solutions (EAS) division within our Digital Office has an opening for a Manager of Firmware Engineering who is passionate about developing and managing a high performing engineering organization focused on developing embedded intelligence for a diverse selection of businesses and products. You will manage firmware/embedded software development teams for our Smart Grid solutions including for demand response, automated metering, substation automation, and distribution automation devices and controls. A strong background in wireless network communications, network routing, standard protocols, and people management is essential. The Manager, Firmware Engineering will report to the Director of Engineering - Utilities. * This position can be based at our Plymouth, Minnesota .. or... Rockville, Maryland facility. Telework/hybrid and remote work flexibilty are available for candidates outside the 50 mile radius of these facilities. Essential Responsibilities: Lead, manage , recruit,and mentor agile global engineering teams, including Engineers, Developers, and Software Architects to deliver intelligent embedded software solutions for Smart Grid products. Establishes, cultivates & leads highly successful teams. Oversees the design, development, and execution of the Product Development roadmap to support business strategy and objectives. Management responsibilities include technical facilitation, budget allocation, hiring, one-on-one meetings with directs, performance reviews, career guidance, technical capability assessments, hardware acquisition, software selection, and interfacing with internal and external partners. Manage resource assignments and needs for contractor staffing to reduce time to market Develop requirements and roadmaps for embedded platforms based on needs from across Eaton businesses and industry trends. Engage directly with businesses to align to our strategic roadmap and long-term vision. Manage software quality through engineering techniques, high caliber talent, code reviews, static/dynamic analysis, rigorous testing, and a persistent focus on automation. Create a highly collaborative, motivated team environment and regularly partner with global Business Leaders, Executives, Project Managers, Product Teams, Stakeholders, Architects, and IT to define requirements, manage product backlogs, prioritize work, and coordinate product roadmaps. Ensure correct technology choices and champion extremely high standards in adherence to best practices while ensuring sound technology, timely and cost-effective designs. Participate in all phases of the product development lifecycle (Concepts, Requirements, Design, Prototype, Testing, Release and Support) following a structured engineering process to ensure quality and reliability. Engage with customers directly to explain technology and discuss field issues. Collaborate, engage, and align across multiple firmware/embedded teams and CoEs throughout the Digital Organization to build a culture of code sharing, insourcing, component reuse, and reusable platform components. Additional Essential Responsibilities: Ownership of tier 2 customer reported issues; evaluation of priority and impact, timely resolution, identify correct action and future prevention. Work intimately with quality control to eliminate escape defects and increase test automation coverage. Collect data across software products and teams to effectively communicate viable metrics used to evaluate code coverage, test automation, customer defect agility, and on time to release. Work with product owners to effectively manage product backlog, requirements, work breakdown and estimation. Resource allocation and estimation required for new product development, maintenance/sustainability, and customer funded development. Evaluate emerging technologies, drive innovation, and manage a technical roadmap for embedded software. Influence architectural decisions and organizational process alignment. Ability to manage geographically dispersed teams. Qualifications Basic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. 10+ years of experience in product development including 7+ years’ hands-on firmware/embedded software development experience. 5+ years of experience managing engineering teams . Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and in the future. No relocation is offered for this position. Only candidates within a 50-mile radius of Plymouth, MN or Rockville, MD will be considered. Active-Duty Military Service member candidates are exempt from the geographical area limitation. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Software Engineering, Technology Development, Technology Management. pr Business Administration. Experience leading and coaching all levels of Software Developers, Architects, Engineers, and front-line managers. 10+ years of experience having primary responsibility for delivery of commercial/industrial and consumer-based products. Knowledge of basic concepts of RF and wireless (cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) communications. Working knowledge of IoT considerations for developing IoT-connected embedded devices. Knowledge of communications protocols, network routing protocols, OSI communication model. 3+ years of experience with Agile development methodologies and concepts within embedded software development lifecycle. Experience with Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, Cybersecurity, and DevOps. Hands on experience with diverse embedded systems including in the microcontroller and Linux spaces. Experience designing real-time control systems. Knowledge and experience with the STM, and/or ARM-based microcontrollers. Abreast of upcoming software development/engineering tools, trends, and methodologies. Experience working in the electric utility market and/or power system knowledge. Travel: up to 10% ( Domestic / International) . Soft Skills: Teamwork, communication, strong interpersonal skills across cultural and organizational boundaries. Coaching, mentoring, and ability to drive collaboration across different product focused teams. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills including the ability to effectively explain complex technical concepts to a wide variety of audiences, high learning agility, great follow thru in meeting commitments . Ability to communicate with multiple groups including marketing, product management, quality, and executive leadership. Strong problem solving and reasoning ability, exhibiting technical innovation and creative solutions. Sharp analytical abilities and proven design skills.
