Job Description

1. Description

The role holder leads teams of experts (e.g. Technical, Quality Assurance, Procurement, Legal, GIP) in sourcing the services and goods required by Pharmaceutical Science or Pharmaceutical Technology & Development from external suppliers, as part of the China Acceleration strategy or to support global projects. These services include Drug Substance, Drug Product, Analytical Services, Pack Label & Distribution, Comparators and Academic Collaborations.

2. Accountabilities/Responsibilities

  • Provide sourcing options and recommendations to Pharmaceutical Development Teams (PDTs) and Supply Chain Teams (SCTs) and in line with the agreed externalisation strategy.
  • Undertake contract negotiations with suppliers in conjunction with Procurement colleagues and representatives from technical functions within PhSci/PT&D.
  • By effective project management, deliver the external component of projects to agreed plan and project scope.
  • Apply risk management techniques to proactively mitigate threats to external sourcing activities and realise opportunities.
  • Act as first point of contact for the escalation of project issues at 3rd parties and drive business improvement by collecting and providing feedback on 3rd party performance.
  • Represent PhSci/PT&D in Procurement-led Business Review Meetings (BRMs) with 3rd parties.
  • Identify the need for technical development activities at 3rd parties and propose solutions in conjunction with relevant technical functions.
  • Maintain an awareness of, and respond to changes in, capabilities and strategies of suppliers in order to take advantage of new opportunities and achieve best value for AZ.
  • Ensure consistency of working practices and risk taking through networking with other Sourcing Project Manager colleagues.
  • Ensure that their own work and work within their group is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment, Quality and Compliance standards.
  • 3.1 Experience, Functional Knowledge, Business Knowledge, Education

  • Will require BSc/PhD level education in a relevant discipline
  • Project Management experience essential
  • Experience of negotiating and contracting, and dealing with IP, Legal and Commercial issues desirable
  • Supplier Relations Management skills desirable
  • Understanding quality principles and GMP requirements desirable
  • Significant number of years’ experience working within a Research & Development or Procurement environment and working with external providers.
  • Appropriate depth of technical knowledge for the activity being sourced, eg.with direct experience of chemical / API manufacture, formulation and/or device development or process development activities, to be able to fully understand any risks to delivery and make the best use of the technical experts on the team to make effective decisions.
  • Knowledge of the PhSci/PT&D Project Operating Model and how the various functions interact to deliver the desired business outcomes
  • A high degree of personal credibility when interfacing with organisations internal and external to AZ
     
  • 4. Internal and External Contacts/Customers

    The role holder will need to establish effective relationships within R&D Supply Chain and with other functions in PhSci/PT&D, and with key internal stakeholders, particularly Procurement, Legal, IP and GES/Operations as well as key external suppliers.
