POSITION SUMMARY

Under general direction is responsible for all interior and exterior painting projects. Carries out and assures successful completion of specific phases and actions in the painting process. Expected to have a clear understanding of what is needed and to exercise initiative, good judgment and competence in carrying out responsibilities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Leads and/or guides the work of lower level painters; provides on-the job training to apprentice painters and monitors performance.
• Surveys buildings to determine repairs needed, selects materials, and develops work plans and schedules for completion.
• Sets up, adjusts and operates spray painting equipment, hand power tools, and surface cleaning equipment.
• Prepares surfaces for painting that may require filling holes, sealing cracks and corners, and removing old paint by needle gunning, sandblasting and pressure washing and/or cleaning.
• Applies and mix paints and other surfacing materials, base materials, thinners, and pigments to exterior and interior building surfaces such as plaster, reinforced plastics, concrete, wood and metal to obtain appropriate consistency, color and drying properties.
• Paints surfaces with various types of paints, epoxies, enamels, glazes, layering, dedicated coatings for demanding exterior conditions and environments using brush/roller, spray application or other power equipment.
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of tools, equipment and supplies; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
• Cultivates communication and shares the benefits of team’s knowledge and collective wisdom.
  

REQUIREMENTS:

• Skill in using special painting techniques such as sponging, distressing, stippling, color blocking, etc. to perform special decorative finishing.
• Excellent knowledge of color theory and color selection.
• Skill in selecting and applying optimal paint options and associated products in order to get the best results.
• Skill in preparing adequate surfaces for receiving adequate primer and paint at the appropriate spread rate and temperature in order to ensure the best results.
• Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
• Ability to plan work schedules and assign duties; ability to provide or arrange for training apprentices.
• Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures related to the trade and handling, storage and disposal of paints with hazardous chemicals.
• Minimum 5 years of continuous practice in the trade.
