Our location in Plano, TX has an opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer II. The Mechanical Engineer will design new implantable, electro-mechanical devices.  You will have the opportunity to develop your engineering skills in a new product development environment, working with experienced engineers on cutting-edge technology. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Conceptualize new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design

  • Apply fundamental engineering principles and analysis to de-risk a design concept before prototyping

  • Conceive and build prototypes to support cross-functional feature development

  • Work with outside consultants, vendors, and the medical community

  • Present designs in cross-functional technical reviews and design reviews

  • Perform empirical studies (including Design of Experiments) to understand design robustness

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute activity in support of project goals

  • Establish requirements and specifications and supports DHF development and review

  • Perform methodical root cause investigations and uses data to identify design/process changes

  • Identify, communicate, and mitigate project risks

  • Ensure compliance with procedural and documentation requirements of SJM, FDA and ISO design controls

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 3+ years of relevant product development or R&D experience

  • Strong history of cross-functional collaboration with other engineering disciplines (Electrical, Manufacturing, etc.)

  • Experience designing for relevant manufacturing processes (e.g. biocompatible material selection, printed circuit board fabrication, machining, injection molding, extrusion, metal forming, welding)

  • Experience with CAD and FEA modeling software (Solidworks/Pro-E)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of sound design principles and practices

  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management techniques

  • Demonstrated knowledge of root cause investigation

  • Experience applying statistical techniques to inform design decisions (e.g. Design for Six Sigma, Design for Manufacturability)

Preferred

  • Advanced degree

  • Experience with implantable hardware

  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical device design controls (21 CFR Part 820) and project management

  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred
