What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role The MSL reporting in the Head of Medical Affairs, acts as a conduit of information about new research developments, clinical trial activities and therapeutic approaches for Amgen South Africa.

The MSL role is to ensure the effective support, communication and feedback to the local GSO team based on the clinical support needs. The individual should understand the company's business objectives which always should be grounded with sound clinical and ethical principles.

The MSL travels often, works intensively with people at every step of the therapeutic product development process and translate dense, academic information into engaging, persuasive scientific and clinical messages.

Key Job Functions:

  • Cultivating and managing relationships with academic researchers and thought leaders
  • Provide support to ongoing clinical studies and Investigators
  • Support R&D efforts for Medicines development across all therapeutic areas
  • Provide input into study feasibilities (in close collaboration with DFM)
  • Mapping out of KOL and OL engagements for new therapeutic area
  • Work closely with local CRO and attend Site Initiation Visits (SIVs)and training
  • Scientific study site support for ASTs (Amgen Study Teams)
  • Provides input to the regional functional team (Scientific Communications Managers, Regional MSL Medical Excellence Lead, TA Regional Leads)
  • Develop, implement and ensure execution of local SEP as guided by line Manager
  • Providing scientific support in the marketing of new therapeutic products to physicians and other healthcare professionals
  • Conduct educational programs to improve medical practice (CMEs, roundtables)
  • Presenting information to cross functional brand teams
  • Close collaboration with Medical Communications Manager in addressing medical information enquiries
  • Field feedback: scientific trends, key insights, ongoing studies, CI
  • Attending conferences and meetings both locally and internationally
  • Ensuring constant engagement with investigators.
  • Local and international travel. 80% field base

Skills & Competencies

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and sustain relationships with industry leaders.
  • Understand clinical research and the process of pharmaceutical product development, and approval.
  • Understands the pharmaceutical regulatory environment.
  • Broad and detailed understanding of clinical trials operations including applicable research initiatives, ongoing studies and a comprehensive product knowledge (dependent on the investigational molecule)
  • Strong communication (verbal, written), interpersonal, and listening skills.
  • Leadership and influence to drive process improvements.
  • Effective negotiation and decision-making skills.
  • A high affinity for collaboration in order to work with customers, partners, and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational and self-management skills, including digital literacy.
  • Ability to multi-task consistently.
  • Comfortable working in a frequently changing environment.
  • Organized and work well cross functionally and globally

Knowledge

  • Demonstrable Industry experience in sales, affiliate Medical Department or Clinical Development preferred
  • Digital literacy must include solid understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Education

  • Medical Doctor Degree, Pharmacy Degree is preferred.
  • BSc. Medical Sciences e.g. Nursing, Dietitian, Physiotherapy, Occupational Health or Other Human Science qualification.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of Pharmaceutical experience in the cardiovascular, nephrology, respiratory or general medicine therapeutic field.
  • Willingness to do extensive local travel
