Job Description

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Microbial Genomics Graduate Scholar, are to: 

 

  • Introduce new and innovative methods for predicting microbial performance from genomics including by building links between genomics and other omic data layers;
  • Provide analysis and feedback about experimental results to supervisors, highlighting important results and defining next step experiments;
  • Design and execute integrated omics studies and analyze data to enable discovery of new microbial traits;
  • Extend and improve existing pipelines for genomic, multi-omic, and comparative genomics analyses by introducing new tools and analyses;
  • Contribute to the development of code, bioinformatics analyses pipelines, computational tools, and databases for mining and visualizing large microbial data sets;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of specialized laboratory and scientific techniques relative to chemical biology and use this expertise to generate insights into the secondary metabolism/natural product chemistry of microbes;
  • Coordinate and cooperate on research activities with peers, supervisors, and subordinates;
  • Communicate effectively by listening, documentation, and presentation. Share insights and facilitate innovation by effectively communicating complex information;
  • Have a broad understanding of scientific principles;
  • Use mathematical and statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and strong scientific acumen to deliver insights, recommendations, and solutions.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Microbial Genomics, Biology, Chemical Biology, or related field with no relevant experience OR Master’s degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Microbial Genomics, Biology, Chemical Biology, or related field, plus one year of relevant experience;
  • Proven ability to handle large genomic data sets efficiently using scripts, databases, and other computational tools;
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (Python or R) and Linux;
  • Research experience in field of expertise;
  • Broad understanding of scientific principles;
  • Experience with quantitative analysis of microbial multi-omics, bacterial metabolism, natural product biosynthetic pathways, and/or comparative genomics;
  • Deep understanding of microbial metabolism, natural product biosynthesis, and the genetics of microbial secondary metabolism;
  • Ability to conceptualize, design, and execute experiments that address research questions;
  • Proficiency with experimental design, statistical analysis;
  • Experience using statistical modelling and machine learning to deliver new insights on biological data;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, able to prioritize and execute tasks in a complex and agile environment, and drive results within set timeframes;
  • Proven record of successful participation in project teams;
  • Commitment to self-development and to learning new tools, techniques.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience working at the interface of bioinformatics and microbiology and/or biochemistry;
  • Experience in Structured Query Language (SQL);
  • Experience working in an High Performance Computing (HPC) environment;
  • Experience working with cloud technologies.
