Neuromorphic Algorithms Researcher (Internship) (m/f/d)
Intel CorporationMunichUpdate time: June 29,2022
Job Description

Intel's Neuromorphic Computing Lab is seeking talented neuromorphic algorithm researchers to pioneer a new class of algorithms targeting Intel's neuromorphic processors. Our goal is to exploit neuromorphic and related non-von Neumann architectures to solve real-world problems with orders of magnitude gains versus the best known conventional solutions in applications ranging from cloud to edge based systems.

Recurrent neural networks and constraint optimization problems have shown significant outperformance on neuromorphic compared to conventional architectures promising a variety of commercialization opportunities. Therefore, the goal of this position is to expand upon these results by developing constraint optimization solvers and analyzing their performance on the Intel Loihi architecture. This opportunity will not only allow you to gain expertise in neuromorphic algorithm research and software development but also to participate in commercializing this technology while solving real-world customer use cases.

To be successful in this position, we are seeking candidates with strong analytical skills in mathematical optimization, probability theory, statistical mechanics, or quantum computing. Candidates should also be familiar with algorithmic complexity analysis and have the ability to write quality code.

As part of your internship, you will join a diverse international team of engineers/researchers. Within our team, your day to day work, may range from high level algorithm/application development, porting these algorithms to Intel's neuromorphic systems and comparing their performance to conventional solutions. You also have the opportunity to contribute to Intel's recently open-sourced Lava software framework for neuromorphic computing or to publish your results in peer-reviewed journals.

Your contributions in any of these areas will have a direct impact on growing the neuromorphic ecosystem and enabling breakthrough applications that demonstrate the value of the neuromorphic computing paradigm.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit a concise and less than 500 word motivation letter, describing how their interests and skills match the requirements of this job opening.

Qualifications

You must possess the below requirements to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. Experience listed below would be obtained through a combination of your schoolwork and/or classes and/or research and/or relevant previous job and/or internship experiences

Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in MSc or Phd program (or similar) in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Computational Neuroscience, Computer/Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

- Strong analytical skills in mathematical optimization, probability theory, statistical mechanics, or quantum computing.
- 2+ years of experience in Python and/or C/C++ with the ability to design and write quality code.

Please note that the student needs to be enrolled for the full duration of the student employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with software frameworks or solvers used in mathematical optimization.
- Experience in developing machine learning algorithms.
- Experience with popular machine learning or other frameworks commonly used in data science.
- Experience in developing algorithms for neuromorphic hardware systems In particular, familiarity with constraints imposed by neuromorphic hardware on algorithm development.
- Experience in collaborative software development (design methodologies, SCRUM, version control, software testing, etc.).
