Job Description

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Vegetable Quality Laboratory Lead, are to: 

 

  • Lead team of four direct reports, eight totals managed in organization;
  • Conduct research and contribute to research projects, technologies, publications, intellectual property or trade secrets;
  • Set strategic direction and manage all operations involving the Vegetable Quality lab in Woodland;
  • Oversee and ensure timely completion of projects, including routine assays, development of new assays, implementation of new technologies to enhance the overall phenotyping capabilities for Bayer Vegetables;
  • Independently identify research opportunities and opportunities for continuous improvement of the vegetable quality lab processes, including improved workflows, advanced in-field and lab assays and technologies to phenotype fruits and vegetables;
  • Demonstrate a sustained high level of technical skill and achievement;
  • Keep abreast of new science and technological developments and exploit them to continuously improve functional area capabilities;
  • Enable data-driven selections and advancements decisions across the entire pipeline by ensuring on-time return of high-quality data to stakeholders;
  • Communicate effectible and establishes team goals and objectives to all relevant stakeholders;
  • Partner with Bayer IT and the Analytics and Pipeline Design team to ensure all data are captured, stored, and available for data analysis;
  • Manage key partnerships with breeding, Market Development, Strategic Account and Crop Teams in NAM to drive efficient use of the Consumer R&D program;
  • Manage budget, investments and resources to fully realize the objectives of the platform by proactive investment management, cost tracking/forecasting and resource planning;
  • Lead people with emphasis on development of critical skills and competencies, recruit for lab assistant/associate and other roles and drive people strategy to increase effectiveness of VQL team;
  • Analyze materials provided to the lab for specialized quality characteristics as defined by stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Plant Biology or related discipline and at least four years of relevant experience or Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry, Plant Biology or related discipline with at least eight years of relevant experience;
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of analytical chemistry, phenotyping fruits and vegetables, developing new assays, and implementation of new technologies;
  • Experience with lab and in-field phenotyping techniques and operations;
  • Proven ability to foster innovation, develop talent, influence and lead diverse teams at all levels;
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively, envision solutions, drive strategy and lead change;
  • Outstanding analytical and communication skills;
  • Strong initiative and results orientation.
