Purpose
As a Packaging Engineer at BillerudKorsn？s you will partner with our Packaging Designers, Sales, Project Management and Implementation, to ensure packaging development meets client and internal requirements. Effectively apply your knowledge of packaging engineering and material science to guide material selection and packaging testing. You will participate in the development of equipment, methods, routines and research projects within our global Engineering team. Special focus is given to engineering solutions that are manufacturable by our global production network.The position’s main tasks and areas of responsibility
Packaging engineering for a diverse array projects including retail, displays, protective, industrial and transport packaging
Proven experience engineering optimized packaging solutions that provide measurable value throughout the packaging supply chain
Insert and cushioning solution engineering
Comparative analysis of paper and packaging. Be able to communicate to a broad target group.
Proof of concept testing and materials specification
Draft packaging material selection and evaluation process SOP and standard
Drive the technical confirmation for the packaging material (including but not limited to ink, glue and coating) which needs to comply with customer’s requirement in terms of heavy metal & Restricted Substance List
Update requirements of Restricted Substance List from different brands, evaluate changes and communicate with group RSL management
Support the implementation and communication to Restricted Substances List both for customer and supplier
Write technical reports and support with post-testing follow up
Perform technical investigations and literature studies within the application
Direct the application of packaging testing results to dieline design revisions
Create packaging analysis and optimized carton suites
Support the Packaging Design Team with specifications and requirements for
implementation overseas
Provide technical support to project and sales teams on new business opportunities
Manage multiple projects with competing deadlines efficiently
Maintain testing lab equipment and best practices
Share knowledge with global team
Frequent communication (phone, video, email) with design and project teams in China, Europe and US, sometimes after hours
Conduct knowledge exchange and technical seminars with production network
Support the Implementation Team with specifications and requirements for production
Education/level of education
Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or related field. Master’s degree is preferred.
Experience (professional experience/industry experience)
Proven ability to work under limited supervision and drive projects to on-time completion
Experience leading projects and project teams
Professional experience working with corrugated plant managers, machine operators, fulfillment agents, or other packaging stakeholders/end users
Exceptional communication skills
Ability to demonstrate our core values in daily work
Ability to work under NDA with sensitive company information
Basic knowledge in chemistry management of packaging industry is preferred
Skills (languages, computer, etc.)
Strong understanding and application of packaging and materials testing defined by TAPPI, ISTA
and ISO
Familiar with RSL and Heavy Metal requirement for packaging industry
Important personal qualities
Other essential qualities for this role are a commercial mind set as well as, self-motivating and driven personality. To succeed, you also need to be innovative, creative and have good communication skills. International travel is required in the first year, so you must be able to obtain US Passport and foreign Visas as needed.
