The Economics and Computation group at Microsoft Research New York City (NYC) and New England (NE) is actively seeking a postdoctoral researcher to be based in Microsoft Research NYC. Topics include algorithmic game theory, design of mechanisms and markets, crowdsourcing & human computation, exploration and incentives, information aggregation & elicitation, including polling and prediction markets, machine learning in economics, fair decision making, and social network theory.
Microsoft Research offers an exhilarating and supportive environment for cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research, both theoretical and applied, with access to an extraordinary diversity of big and small data sources, budget for online experimentation, an open publications policy, and close links to top academic institutions around the world. We seek applicants with the passion and ability to craft and pursue an independent research program, including a strong publication record at top research venues. The earliest start date is July 1, 2020.
The postdoc is expected to work closely with relevant researchers at MSR-NYC, including Nicole Immorlica, David Rothschild, Alex Slivkins, and Jenn Wortman Vaughan. Collaborators at MSR-NE include Brendan Lucier and Vasilis Syrgkanis. Current postdocs in the group include Rupert Freeman and Thodoris Lykouris at MSR NYC and Yannai Gonczarowski in MSR NE. The postdoc will have the opportunity to collaborate across other focus areas of the NYC lab—machine learning, computational social science, computer systems, and FATE—and with MSR colleagues around the world.
The typical length of a postdoc is two years, following the academic calendar. A one-year postdoc is also possible, if you have (or will have) a tenure-track offer and are able to defer it for at least one year to accept our position.
To be assured of full consideration, all application materials, including reference letters, need to be received by December 1, 2019. Applications received after that date may or may not be considered.
A complete application packet should include:
- CV, which lists all peer-reviewed publications.
- At least three reference letters (in nearly all cases one will be from your dissertation advisor; others may be from any other senior collaborators).
- Research statement (approximately 3-4 pages) that outlines your research achievements and agenda.
- 2 writing samples: conference or journal articles, book chapters, etc., that you are most proud of and which best demonstrate your expertise.
To get started with your application, press the “Apply now” button above. When prompted, provide names and contact information of your references. Upload your research statement and the two writing samples as separate attachments. Remember to press the “Submit” button at the last screen.
After you submit your application, the system will send a request for letters to your list of referees on your behalf. Note: The application system will not request reference letters until after you have submitted your application. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance so that they will be ready to submit your letter by our application deadline of December 1, 2019. While you will not be able to view the letters themselves, you can check the status of individual reference requests within your application.
We are committed to building an inclusive, diverse and pluralistic research environment, and strongly encourage applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, veterans, as well as students with non-traditional backgrounds.
