Job Description
The Office of Regulatory Science in the U.S. Food and Drug Administrations Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition is seeking a biologist, plant biologist, molecular biologist, or food scientist to conduct research in our allergen detection program. This is a post-doctoral position potentially renewable for up to 5 years. The primary research goal for this position is to develop DNA-based methods for detection of peanut and/or tree nuts in complex food matrices. In our laboratory, we have already successfully developed PCR methods for the detection of crustacean shellfish allergens in complex foods, and we are extending this work to peanut and tree nut allergens. We expect that methods employed will include PCR, real-time PCR, or sequencing-based methods such as next-generation sequencing.

A Ph.D. in biology, plant biology, genomics, food science, or related fields is required and must have been obtained within the past 5 years. Applicants to this position should have expertise in peanuts, tree nuts, allergens, and/or PCR-based detection methods. Applicants should also have a strong interest in method development. Experience with molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR and real-time PCR is preferred.

The primary responsibilities of this position will include planning and conducting laboratory experiments, analyzing and managing data, and preparing manuscripts and presentations for scientific conferences.

This position will include an annual salary of $76,000. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is required. The position is located at FDAs Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition in College Park, MD. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, names of references, and a statement describing how their experience, skills and interests are suited to this position to: Anne C. Eischeid, Ph.D., Chemical Hazards and Contaminants Branch, Division of Bioanalytical Chemistry, Office of Regulatory Science, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, HFS-716, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, MD, 20740.
